August is one of Lake Garda’s hottest months and, along with July, is also the most popular time to holiday here. You can enjoy the refreshing breeze in the northern resorts (Riva, Limone and Torbole) which takes a welcome edge off the summer heat, or simply bask in the sheltered suntraps towards the south (Sirmione, Desenzano and Peschiera) which feel much warmer.
Relaxing by the lake and keeping cool in the water is a great way to spend a day or two in the summer. While the majority of Lake Garda’s beach areas are pebbled, Sirmione, Lazise and Maderno have sandy beaches. Swimmers will find the warmest water at the southern end of the lake while the water towards the north is cooler and the activities more water-sports orientated. Two excellent beaches for families are Torbole’s life-guard patrolled Lido Blu and Baia delle Sirene in Garda which also offers children’s activities. As well as some gloriously secluded spots, many of the beaches have bars, restaurants, volleyball courts and equipment to hire from deckchairs to pedallos.
Top Tips: Brilliant ways to avoid the hottest part of the day include visiting Lake Garda’s historical and religious buildings (Salò and Malcesine are great for this), browsing the shops (best for shopping are Desenzano and Riva) and enjoying charming gelaterias and cafe’s which are to be found everywhere.
