Salo is a good base for the adventurous holidaying in May, offering an activity packed holiday in a mild climate. There’s plenty of beautiful walking and cycling on offer around Salò; the Alto Garda Bresciano national park stretches behind the resort offering amazing walking, cycling and horseriding routes and an interesting museum as well as all sorts of plants and wildlife. Also in Salò, the Rimbalzello Adventure park has exciting outdoor rope and climbing trails of different difficulties for all ages. May is a brilliant time to stay in Salò for these activities as the resort gets busier and warmer later on in the summer.
Salò is also great if you’re looking for a holiday in May where you can really relax. It has a lovely long promenade (the longest in Lake Garda) with cafes and restaurants for leisurely walks and simply watching the world go by. The botanical gardens of André Heller over in nearby Gardone are stunning at this time of year and well worth a visit. If you’re caught in a rainy spell in Salò there’s still a lot to see indoors (particularly if you like art and history) at Salò’s centre-point cathedral, the Palazzo della Magnifica Patria and the palazzo of the Podestà.
Salò is perfect for a quiet, relaxing holiday, and if you want a busier environment visit in one of the larger Italian towns, such as Desenzano or Riva. Sun worshipers might want to spend time in one of the southern resorts such as Sirmione to get the best of the May sunshine while for water sports, check out Torbole in the far north.
