Desenzano offers a fantastic combination of picture postcard scenery and Italian town atmosphere and, with the summer crowds tending to fizzle out after the mid-summer rush, September is a great place to go if you want more time and space to enjoy the area.
While its southern position on the lake means it can get really hot in July and August, the temperature in Desenzano cools in September, giving a more comfortable climate. With the beginning of Autumn, some of the more tourist orientated destinations on Lake Garda can become quite quiet, but Desenzano retains that bustling atmosphere you get from a proper Italian town which functions throughout the year.
The weather here in September is mostly sunny and warm. Enjoy the sun-warmed water while swimming or on pedalo, sunbathe on the beach, sit back at the harbour and explore the historic city centre. As well as providing a great atmosphere, the fact that Desenzano is a proper Italian town means it has something to do in all weather. September’s short rainy spells (which only occur on about 8 days out of the whole month) are no hindrance at all here. Desenzano has some of the best shopping on the lake as well as a stunning cathedral and churches which are well worth visiting either during a rare shower or for respite from the afternoon sun. For fantastic views over the lake, head up to the castle. Evenings are mild in September and Desenzano has the best nightlife in the area - Piazza Malvezzi or Matteotti. If you want to visit other Italian towns during your stay, Milan, Verona and Venice are all within easy reach thanks to Desenzano having its own train station.
We love Desenzano’s bustling town atmosphere and excellent transport links. To visit somewhere quiet have a look at Torri and Gardone Riviera.
