Steamboat New Year holidays
Almost everyone loves a party on New Year’s – a chance to celebrate the end of the prior year, and see in the new one as you mean to go on (and no, we don’t mean with a hangover). Steamboat, in typical American fashion, usually ensures that every age is catered for with shows and events.
It’s likely to be a Champers filled week and we don’t just mean the bubbly stuff – the “champagne powder” the resort is synonymous for has been known to cover the resort at this time of year, making for outrageously good skiing. Make sure Father Christmas brings you thermals as it can get super cold between 2100 and 3200m.
If you want a civilised evening, one of the best options to go for would be a lovely sit down meal – there’s much to be said about eating fine food amongst friends or family. If its luxury you’re after, Café Diva is one of the best places around. This award-winning restaurant (named “Best of the Boat” for fine dining experience) typically offers its New Year customers either a vegetarian or meat inclusive tasting menu. Alternatively, the Sheratons offers a slightly cheaper option, with a dinner available for about half the price or an “Appetizer Kick-off”, a perfect viewpoint of the fireworks and torchlight parade, usually including a drink coupon and an appetizer bar.
For other events, you can expect the ski resort tradition of a torchlight parade followed by fireworks. The resort’s instructors make their way down the slopes holding torches, followed by a huge fireworks display, all of which usually starts early evening to ensure that even the youngest spectators get to celebrate before bed. Past years have seen concerts and even an ice castle in the town, great fun for kids and elders alike. For a more adult-centred stance to the celebration, there are numerous free parties throughout town – Carl’s Tavern usually has live music and DJs and the Tap House Sports Bar has in past years put on duelling DJs for you to dance the night away to.
