If you’re heading to Les Diablerets at New Year, you’ll have all the usual winter activities to hand, possibly topped off with the Music and Snow festival which has been held in recent years. The festival celebrates the winter season and tends to involve live concerts and the Christmas market which typically lasts until early January. There’s usually a moonlit sledge run on the big night, whilst bars like MTB and L’Ormonan have been known to host their own New Years’ events.
The glacier has a strong snow record for late December and early January and is traditionally the area’s best location for skiing at this time of year. We love the thrill of freeriding down Olden after a particularly heavy snowfall – you’ve little chance of finding a run that’s more suitable as your ‘first of the year’ to conquer! If the weather does happen to slightly rival the arctic, the Meilleret area has some great runs through the trees and south-facing Issenau gets the best of the sunshine.
