Baqueira Beret New Year holidays
When it comes to New Year’s Eve in a ski resort, the Spanish don’t do things by halves. The rapid increase of Porsches, Bmw’s and Ferraris cruising the mountain roads of Baqueira in the week leading up to New Year’s signals the arrival of Spain’s elite to his Majesty King Juan Carlos’ favoured home away from home. In previous years, the early season conditions have been impressive thanks to large chunks of the area being over 2000m high. Just to be sure, this resort also operates over 600 snow cannons – so even in the event of a low-snow year piste coverage should still be up to snuff.
After night falls, everyone usually gathers at the base of the Baqueira red run in 1500 and a 500-person-strong army of volunteers begins a winding torch-lit descent towards the village. As they near the bottom, fireworks shoot up over the mountains and illuminate the valley. The torch-train’s arrival at the base of the resort is cause for celebration, and wine and tapas begin to flow- all the way up to the countdown at midnight. This order of events has been happening for a few years now, and we hope it’s set to continue!
Keep an eye out for the Spanish tradition of fitting a grape in to your mouth for each chime of the clock after midnight; this wonderfully bizarre practice seems highly likely to make for some comic scenes! If you’d rather turn in early, the area’s fantastic mix of powder, groomers and more is often gloriously quiet on the morning of January the 1st (possibly due to the fact that Tiffany’s, the crowning jewel of the Baqueira nightclub scene usually stays open until 7am…).
