St Cristina New Year holidays
Although the neighbouring villages of Ortisei and Selva tend to be a bit more lively come the New Year celebrations, St Cristina is by no means a resort that likes to go to bed early on the last night of the year.
In past years, Dosses Square has collected a good crowd for an open air New Year’s Eve party. The fireworks, DJ music and lights usually go nicely with a drink in one hand (or both depending on how much skiing you plan to do the next day...). Piz 5, the main nightclub, usually hosts a good party or if it’s a quieter New Year and a real Tyrolean feast you’re after, take a look at your accommodation options as the hotels often put on some great gala evenings.
The ski schools like to get involved in the celebrations too, usually with a ski show of some sort. You might also find a torchlit descent organised from one or more of the slopes. This time of year is also a good excuse to try out the night skiing over at the Risaccia slope in Selva; a good way to appreciate the village lights from a distance.
For those planning to get up before noon, a New Year’s resolution like getting round the entire Sella Ronda route in under the average 6 hours or challenging yourself to the Sassolungo world cup downhill run might be good motivation. It’s a well-known fact that New Year can get a little busy, so if the Seceda area does start to fill up, get yourself on the Val Gardena train across to Ciampinoi for an opportunity to roam.
