St Cristina Christmas holidays
If you haven’t had a Christmas in the Dolomites yet, it’s well worth considering; with pretty villages, striking scenery, oodles of skiing and a festive mood all over, it’s a tricky one to beat…
St Cristina’s Christmas market is a long standing tradition, with little wooden huts full of Tyrolean treats and trinkets. The area is big on its wood carving trade and in past years there’s been an incredibly impressive large scale nativity scene on show at the sports centre (apparently it’s the world’s biggest of its kind!).
There are plenty of mountain activities to add to the merriment. Take the Rasciesa chair lift from Ortisei or ski down the red from the Seceda area and you’ll find a 6km toboggan run. Ice skating at the Iman Sports centre is a great activity and the Monte pana stables do scenic winter hacks. Nothing however says “Christmas” quite like a carriage ride in the snow over at Alpe di Siusi...
With the majority of slopes sitting at a high altitude and snowmaking covering lots of the area, there is some leeway to be optimistic about the conditions at this time of year. If heaps of skiing is at the top of your Christmas list, ask Santa for the Dolomiti Superski pass; 12 valleys making up 1200km of piste would be a hard Christmas present to match!
