Selva Christmas holidays
If it’s the genuine white-Christmas package you are after, Selva is a good choice. Take a camera as the snowy alpine foliage and chapels, looking like they have been sprinkled with icing sugar make a wonderful postcard. The snowfall is pretty reliable at this time of year, with lots of snowmaking if things need a top up and a good choice of tree-sheltered runs if the weather gets a little over-excited. Generally the slopes aren’t found to be too over-crowded either. The Siberian Husky rides, 6km toboggan run and ice skating are good options for more of a festive edge and if you’re here with children, they’ll love the ski school torchlight descent that usually takes place.
Val Gardena traditionally holds an annual Christmas market with a typical Tyrolean underlying theme. In past years, little wooden huts have sold all sorts of handicrafts, wooden carvings and decorations and you’re never too far from a Christmas carol or a warming mug of bombardino. See if they’re doing the snow sculpture competition again this year, which unveils some true artisans and if children are lucky, St. Nicholas tends to pay a visit to the village over at Ortisei (a bus ride away). Many of the hotels get involved in the festive spirit too, reflected in their menus and organised evening festivities.
