Folgarida Christmas holidays
Surrounded by a dazzling, snow-dusted pine forest and made up of traditional-style architecture, Folgarida has a real chocolate-box appeal at any time of year, but especially at Christmas. If this year’s anything like previous ones, the nearby resort of Madonna di Campiglio (reached either on skis or by bus) will host the fantastic ‘Mercantino di Natale’, complete with festive market stalls and a magnificent glittering Christmas tree. Folgarida’s hotels tend to put on speciality menus around this time, whilst activities such as dog-sledding become increasingly popular with locals and tourists alike. If you don’t mind taking the bus, going skating on the nearby ice rink at the Folgarida Stadium is another festive activity the whole family can enjoy.
Skiing the resort’s upper-most runs might seem more like an arctic expedition at this time of year, but if you plan ahead it need not be so troublesome. The Monte Spinale and Paso Groste areas of Madonna di Campiglio are forgivingly south-facing so you have the option to get the extended pass and stick with these if you get any bleak days. The extensive snowmaking in the region will not only combat icy conditions but is a fabulous way of guaranteeing that fairy-tale white Christmas, meanwhile lower pistes in wooded areas should have better preserved snow and more visibility if any early season white-outs kick in.
Being in Italy, there are plenty of cafes along the way to rest for a warming drink. Refugio Orti is between the Orti and Nera black runs on Marilleva – top up your festive spirit by the roaring fire with a hot chocolate... For a spot of Dutch courage to ski the black pistes after, make that a vin brulè!
