Salla New Year skiing

Salla New Year holidays

Somewhere on the bucket list, there has to be something about going to see the Northern Lights. We could get technical and start explaining how they are a result of electrically charged particles colliding in the atmosphere but we’ll just stick to saying they’re a collection of beautifully patterned colours seen glowing in the night sky. Salla makes a great viewing spot, usually between the hours of 21:00 – 01:00 when the temperature is sub-zero. Put it this way, you won’t need New Year fireworks.

For a resolution while you are out there, dabble in a spot of ice-fishing and for the really brave – go for a swim in an ice-hole. You could snowmobile through the trees and across the beautiful stretches of snow during the day and on night guided safaris. Along the way are little campfire tents where you can stop for a snack and warm up a bit. The reindeer park makes for a good place to visit and they organise rides from here as well as husky excursions. Work will seem a lifetime away and the snowshoe walks are a great way to immerse yourself in the untouched nature.

New Year is obviously a peak time of year but the word ‘busy’ doesn’t exist on these slopes. Queues are pretty much non-existent and it is a small skiing area that you can explore on the mountain at leisure.

For a celebratory meal, the Log restaurant has a filling dish or two but the Revontuli’s a la carte menu is where the Finnish specialties are at. A bus over the 10km to the main Salla town will take you to a greater collection of shops and restaurants for bit more of a New Year buzz.

One thing we will say is that it is not worth removing that extra fleece just so you can squeeze your suitcase shut... The cold is something that you really should be prepared for as it has been known to drop as low as -35 oC at this time of year. Arm yourself with lip balm and hand warmers too as you don’t want to be concentrating on the weather more than you are the scenery. The daylight hours flit around the 5 hour mark but lit slopes will keep you’re skiing going.
