Salla Christmas holidays
Christmas in Salla is an absolute dreamland for children. Make it their Christmas present this year to take them off to Lapland; the home of elves, over 20,000 reindeer and Father Christmas himself. You can even take them to visit his secret cottage or ‘Tuvat’. He lives in a place called Korvatunturi and the Finnish children know him as Joulupukki.
There are heaps of winter wonderland activities to do off the slopes... Reindeer rides are available at the Salla Reindeer Park and safaris are organised in the day for a great view of the landscape and at night for the northern lights. Reindeer competitions are normally held all around Lapland, with the drivers on skis; it can get pretty heated! From the park, you can also book Husky rides where a guide will teach you the stop and turns (or you can just snuggle up in a blanket and let someone else to the work). The longer rides normally organise a picnic too.
Sometimes it is worth hiring a car to do a bit more exploring. Laino Snow Village is a great little place complete with igloos, sculptures and an ice bar! You’ll be able to visit the main town too which is 10km away. You’ll find a bit more in the way of shops and restaurants than in the actual resort.
Try something different for Christmas dinner; local delicacies include Lappish cheeses, fresh fish and reindeer dishes (although you might not want to tell the littl’uns they’re eating Rudolph...).
Temperatures can range between -4oC and -35oC with limited daylight hours around 10:30am - 15:00pm. This shouldn’t affect your skiing too much though because the majority of slopes are well-lit; It just ends up adding a bit more magic to the slopes.
