Fernie Half Term holidays
At half-term, we love Fernie's low key vibe for families, while teachers who need to get away from it all will have just what the doctor ordered.
Make one of the hotels or condos in the Alpine Resort your base and you'll have swift access to the slopes throughout the week, not to mention great meeting points like the Rusty Edge for cheap food, good drinks and a merry atmosphere. If you'd rather stay in the historic town, you'll find all sorts of restaurants, coffee houses and bars dotted around the legendary 2nd Avenue, as well as indoor activities at the Aquatic centre.
The incredible ski area meets the needs of beginners and experts alike and should be topped in metres of snow at this time of year (the annual average is a whopping 10m). Learners will easily fall in love with the groomers around the Mini and Mighty Moose lifts, while for confident skiers, Fernie's seemingly endless steeps, chutes, bowls and bumps are yours to roam.
There's no denying the journey time's longer than resorts in the Alps, but for some of the world's best terrain and the feeling of a proper getaway, many say it's worth it (and if you ever needed time to get the homework or marking done, a trans-Atlantic flight usually does the trick…).
