Located in one of the most visually stunning regions of the Alps, Zurs is a picture perfect setting for Christmas this year. There’s usually more than enough snow by Christmas – Zurs has some of the best conditions in Austria – and you’ll find all sorts of festive activities to keep you entertained all week.

A romantic horse drawn sleigh ride is the perfect way to cap a festive day on the slopes, and children will be enchanted by the magical journey. Zurs’ natural ice rink has some incredible views of the surrounding area, though if the weather gets a bit inclement then there’s an indoor rink nearby.

The Christmas market at the Rüfiplatz can be found on most weekends during the festive season. Locals and tourists alike pack the streets to squeeze in a bit of Christmas shopping and sample the delicious local fares- the jagertee and glühwein are usually flowing freely so you’ll have no trouble getting into the Christmas spirit. Children are in for a treat as after a day’s skiing Father Christmas himself often makes an appearance on the day itself in the Edelweiß square.

Many of the region’s hotels put on gala dinners on Christmas Eve and Christmas day- these are definitely worth investigating, and will remove all the stresses of trying to organise Christmas dinner whilst abroad. Driving to Zurs over Christmas will allow you to stash as many presents as you want amongst your luggage, and will also give you some extra time for last minute shopping on the way down. However, a package that includes flights is great for those who want to maximise their time on the slopes, or who need to rush home for New Year’s.
