St Wolfgang New Year holidays
If you prefer to say a quieter “Hello” to the New Year and like the sound of mixing ski days with traditional Austrian festivities back in town, get together with the rest of the Wolfgangsee community for a post-Christmas week in St Wolfgang.
The New Year’s Markets traditionally begin in the centres of St. Gilgen and Strobl and at Postplatz in St. Wolfgang during the run up to New Year’s Eve. Expect tasty Austrian culinary delicacies like Apfelstrudel and Schnitzelsemmeln as well as dangerously good Glühwein to help you say “Prost” to the New Year (that’s “cheers” to you and me).
For the big day, book a scenic sleigh ride around the lake, head back to the Furian Lounge for a warm drink then go to the traditional New Year’s Eve Gala dinner at the prestigious White Horse Inn. Alternatively, do your own thing before joining the rest of the revellers by the lakeside to watch the customary fireworks.
Both the Postalm and Dachstein West ski areas are within an hour and a half’s drive. Postalm is usually quieter than other resorts this time of year so you can recover on the slopes in peace. If you fancy a challenge worthy of a New Year’s resolution, attempt the ‘Wilde Hilde’ run in Dachstein West.
