St Wolfgang Half Term holidays
Escape to a sleepy lakeside town with real “winter wonderland” status. A great base for both skiers and non-skiers, this resort works well if you’re worried that beginners might not catch the ski bug and want the back-up of other activities to fill the week if necessary. If you like the idea of splitting the time between ski days and days spent exploring an old Austrian lake town, you’ve hit the nail on the head with St Wolfgang.
As it’s detached from the ski areas (both within a 90 minute drive), the town is typically quieter this time of year than the big ski towns. The skiing in Postalm tends to be fairly relaxed – far less shoulder barging than other purpose-built resorts. The beginner zone is great for kids finding their feet on the planks and the slopes at Dachstein West are spread between three zones so crowds are usually well dispersed - less queuing, more powder!
Back in town, regular buses or ferries to St. Gilgen, Strobl or Bad Ischl mean you enjoy days out and about when you want a break from the skis. Check out the ice skating rink in St. Gilgen or if you fancy something more cultured, visit the home of Mozart’s sister Nannerl. For something completely wacky – if the weather conditions are good the White Horse Inn traditionally plays host to the Dirndl-Flugtag in February, where locals and tourists can dress up in a traditonal Austrian costumes and dive into the hot spring, all judged by a local expert. There are even prizes for the jump with the most originality and entertainment factor...
