St Wolfgang Christmas holidays
St. Wolfgang is a super option if you can’t make your mind up between spending the week browsing traditional Christmas markets or skiing the mountains...
The ski areas are a bit of a commute (45-90 min drive) but if you’re planning on mixing ski days with a few days spent exploring the village and doing other winter activities, you’ve certainly picked the right place. This kind of set-up also works well if you’re not sure you or some of your party will take to skiing – both ski areas are good for beginners but in the unlikely event that the ski bug isn’t catching, there’s still a week of alternative winter fun to enjoy at Christmas.
The Advent events are the highlight of the year in the Wolfgangsee area and the resort is traditionally host to some fantastic markets - both locally and across its four neighbouring towns. Alongside stalls selling handicrafts and festive goodies (awesome stocking fillers), look out for their customary nativity scene and Angel Post Office, where kids get the chance to write down their Christmas wishes. There’s often a spectacular event where you can watch the lake light up with candlelit floating lanterns, well worth grabbing a Glühwein and enjoying the magic. Regular boat trips carry visitors from one village to another, so you can enjoy all the seasonal food and drink you can muster. We love the floating punch hut in Strobl, but mind those specialty drinks – they’d make even Santa lose his way! Go snowshoeing and book a horse-drawn sleigh ride for a week that couldn’t be more packed with ‘winter wonderland’ fun.
