Each year on New Year’s Eve the village of St Johann is illuminated by the flicker of candles, the gentle glow of torches and the brilliance of fireworks. With warm up parties in the street to get you in the mood for the countdown itself, the glühwein is usually flowing freely as you beat the chilly weather. There’s usually a torchlight descent into the village by a local ski team, as well as a snowboarding show and even fire jumps! The festivities often start not long after you’re off the piste- most have had their first glass of glühwein by five, so by the time the DJ kicks off in the evening everyone’s in a pretty jovial mood. The locals are proud of their town- and justifiably so- and make sure everyone is welcome during the festive period. Many of the region’s hotels put on gala dinners for New Year’s eve- definitely worth investigating if you’re staying in a hotel, but make sure you’re back outside in time for the fireworks. If you’re spending Christmas at home and want to head to the slopes as soon as the last present is unwrapped then take advantage of one of our packages that includes flights and transfers to cut down on last minute panics. Guests wishing to explore more than a few of the regions ski areas will benefit from having a car with them in resort- if this is you then check out some of our self-drive holidays. It’s about a ten hour drive from Calais, but you could end up gaining some of that time back by not having to wait for busses during the week!
