Soldeu & El Tarter Christmas holidays
At Christmas, the slopes tend to be quieter and the costs sleigh-loads cheaper- the kind of Christmas present we appreciate.
This is a top resort for families if you want to treat the kids to a white Christmas away – whether you’re making the most of the beginner slopes and Brit-led ski schools to introduce the clan to the piste or heading out to roam the entire biggest ski area in the Pyrenees, including El Tartar’s legendary Snowpark and freeride zone.
While the Grandvalira isn’t in quite the same league as snow sure glacier ski areas like Espace Killy, the snow is usually in good supply here at Christmas. Ski over 2000m from the top lift stations (Tossal de la Llosada has slopes from 2560m) and head back to the base stations between the treeline for shelter in snowy weather. 60% of the slopes are kitted out with artificial snow cannons in case a top up is needed.
The overall atmosphere is pretty laid back, but there are still enough bars and restaurants for evenings fuelled by Acqua d'Or, the favourite Catalonian Brandy. Fat Albert’s (Fatty’s to locals) serves up suppers in portions that would leave Santa full and the nightclub upstairs is open till 3 or 4 all week - if you fancy getting particularly merry.
Joy to the world: Andorra is also duty-free, meaning your Christmas money will stretch that little bit further. Take the 30 minute bus ride from the main road to Andorra la Vella, the capital city, for the cheapest alcohol you’ll ever set eyes on (we’re talking Grand Mariner at around 3 Euros a bottle).
