Ski holidays in Germany

German ski resorts might not share the same international status as other European nations – you won’t find enormous ski areas or wild party scenes – but by mixing Bavarian charm with top notch technology, they have the makings for a wonderful week on the snow.

Most are close enough to Austria for a cross-border day trip and within easy reach of Munich for a spot of city life. They’re also surprisingly easy to drive to from the UK, many taking less time, less road tolls and less hassle than road trips to France.

Most popular ski resorts in Germany

Garmisch Partenkirchen is easily the biggest name in German ski resorts – its two ski villages were joined together for the 1936 Olympics and have remained at the forefront of German skiing ever since. 60km of pistes are split between the Classic area (home to the FIS Kandahar run) and the glacier ski area on Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain.

Taking the title for Germany's biggest ski area is Oberstdorf, which shares 128km of slopes with Kleinwalsertal in Austria. Its local mountain, the Nebelhorn, has Germany’s longest valley run at 7.5km.

Berchtesgaden covers the ski areas of Rossfeld and Gutshof Obersalzberg, and made history as the home to Eagle’s Nest, the mountain house where Hitler spent his time during WWII.

You’ll also find smaller ski resorts like Ruhpolding, which have a handful of their own slopes and more to ski just a train ride or drive away.
