Overview: hotel description: Ylläs Saaga Spa Hotel description

The Ylläs Saaga Hotel is a modern hotel located beside the Lappish fells - it's right in the centre of the Ylläsjärvi side of the fell, next to the ski lifts, ski school and ski hire shop. The cosy rooms are furnished to a high standard, and have everything you need for a week in Lapland, plus many of our rooms have views over the fell. Customers who would like a little more space may also like the Ylläs Saaga Apartments which are self-catering, but have the option to pre-book half board (at a supplement) which is taken in the hotel.

Slope side location

Located on the Ylläsjärvi side of the fell, the Ylläs Saaga Hotel offers convenientaccess onto the slopes. The Saaga Hotel, village and slopes of Ylläsjärvi are on the southern side of the fells, and the village and slopes of Äkäslompolo are located on the northern side of Ylläs. Once you have made it to the top station of the lifts, you can choose which direction you want to take. The slopes are varied, and often relatively uncrowded - ideal for skiers and boarders who are just starting out.

Soothing Spa

After a day of exploring Ylläs, there is nowhere better to relax and unwind than in the hotels own wellness centre. Have a dip in the indoor pool, soothe any aches and pains in the hot tub, or warm up in the sauna and steam room. For the younger guests, there is also a children's pool and splash area. Pamper yourself and book a massage or treatment with the hotel reception (payable locally). Alternatively, if you are keen to keep up your fitness levels there is also an on-site gym (reservation only).

Warm up and relax

The Fireplace Bar is the perfect place to come after a day on the slopes to unwind and warm up with a couple of drinks. Later in the evening you can enjoy a three course evening meal taken at the Biegga buffet restaurant, which has fantastic views across the fells and Ylläsjärvi. For a little extra, you can enjoy a meal at the à la carte restaurant - Tsohka, the restaurant's menu is inspired by Lappish ingredients and local flavours. Guests receive a discount for the à la carte restaurant, please inform the reception team 6pm the day before if you want to have dinner in Tsohka.

This gorgeous Lapland resort (pronounced “U-las”) has welcomed skiers since the 1930s and is the biggest of the 35 ski areas in Finland, home to the country’s longest slope, the 3km Jättipitkä run (which translates to ‘enormously long’!). The resort is split into two villages on either side of the region’s highest “fell” - a smooth mountain rising above the treeline. Both villages have remained true to their roots - Ylläsjärvi in the south and Äkäslompolo in the north – and both are authentic, b...
With 63km of downhill slopes, the skiing is fairly compact although over 300km of designated tracks make this one of the best cross-country destinations in the world. The uncrowded, perfectly groomed slopes are a beginner’s dream and make learning to ski a fun and relaxing experience. The ski schools meet on both sides of the mountain and speak excellent English with group lessons normally having small class sizes to give a personal feel. Early intermediates will love the wide, cruising runs which are perf...
Both villages are sleepy and traditional so while there are nice places to go for a drink, those looking for a European party scene might be somewhat disappointed. The focus is more on relaxation and entertainment away from the slopes of which there’s more than enough to keep all ages very happy. The Akäs hotel is most popular for a few drinks with a dance floor and club inside, while the restaurants in the resort serve all kinds of local delicacies – reindeer and freshly caught fish are both highly recommend...

"Great hotel – staff very friendly!"

Great hotel, staff very friendly. Basic rooms. Plenty of food choices, pasta. Close to the Gondola lifts and more access from the other side of Yllas. Best holiday I’ve ever been on, Husky sledging, reindeer farm were amazing, Santa village was amazing as well. So impressed we even got to see the Northen lights. We travelled December 2022 with our Daughter her Husband and two very exited Grandchildren. The Hotel was everything we imagined it would be in beautiful Lapland. When I recently asked my Grandson what was the best thing about Lapland with snow, ice, reindeer, Santa Claus and sledging, snow angels, snow balls he had a very serious expression and said the very best thing for him was the food in the hotel! After months of planning with lots of secrecy and not to mention many pounds, he liked the food! I would recommend this hotel this part of Lapland.

"Relaxed log fires, pool and jacuzzi + nice bar"

Colin, Ealing
4/ out of 5
The Saaga is really nice, it’s quite new and modern but with cosy log fires and the overall atmosphere is pretty quiet and relaxing. The food was nice and everyone in the hotel was really friendly – lots of Brits! We used the steam room, the swimming pool and the Jacuzzis which were all good, especially if you want to relax after skiing. There’s a hut down the little road but the hotel itself has a really nice bar if you want a few drinks. Our room was nice and spacious, all the rooms have balconies and on the side of the hotel we stayed on you could see right across the little street which wound further down. I think you got the view up into the mountains if your room was on the other side. I stayed here with friends and would say it’s best for couples or smaller groups. There weren’t many families when we were here but we didn’t stay over any school holidays, I expect over Christmas there might be more families here who want to meet Father Christmas in Lapland!
