They call Stratton a schizophrenic ski resort. Catering to a New York clientele, it’s high-class on the mountain and off. But it also happens to be the birthplace of boarding. Bogner big shots share gondolas with Jager bomb boarders – they chat about their shared love of Stratton’s fast lifts, lively Village and great snow guarantee. It’s an odd coupling, but it works.
Owned by Intrawest, the team behind Whistler and Mont Tremblant, Stratton brings big league skiing to a little spot in Vermont’s rolling Green Mountains. Climb the old fire tower at the summit to peek above the pines for a 360° view of 4 different states. Looking west you’ll spot the mountains near New York, a city with a big influence on Stratton which is called home by much of its clientele.
The New York state of mind has done a great deal for the resort and cobbled village that is its base – consistently in the top 10 for grooming, lifts, parks, food and chic boutiques. Organic meats and pre-prepped gourmet dishes are staples at the store, New York newspapers provide breakfast reads and nearby Manchester has enough discounted designer wear to send shopaholics into overdrive. Proximity to New York is also great for those wanting to combine a city break with a snow holiday and get the most mileage out of the Transatlantic flight.
If you’re not here for fine dining, luxury accommodation or the exclusive Stratton Mountain Club, chances are you’re a snowboarder. Slightly at odds with its shiny exterior, Stratton is the first stop on any one-plank pilgrimage, as this was first resort to allow boarders on its slopes (in 1983). Jake Burton started his iconic brand building prototypes in a local garage, which he would test out on Suntanner under cover of darkness. The pivotal moment came in 1985 when they started holding the US Open Snowboarding Championships here, now one of the biggest events on any respectable rider’s schedule.

Certainly one of the best New England ski area's for those with a penchant to shop, you have both the well-above-average choice in the resort itself and the bonus of designer factory outlets in nearby Manchester. Most of Stratton's shops are neatly concentrated in the small slopeside mall at the centre, mixed with the eateries and termed an 'eclectic mix' of stores by the resort itself, although the weighting is, not surprisingly, heavily in favour of sportswear. The under-cobbles heating which ensure that any snow falling fizzes away to nothing as it hits the ground means on the one hand that walking from store to store is as easy as in any metropolitan mall. Those who love snow might not be 100% enamoured at not having to battle through ice and snow to get from one shop window to the next, but that's just a matter of opinion.
Apart from the half dozen ski and board shops there's a chocolate shop, stationers, jewellers and golfing store. The general emphasis is 'up market'. The two famous name ski shops are Bogner, with their European fur fringed kit and North Face. 100 yards/metres away from the main mall is Stratton Mountain Provisions, which, as 'general stores' in ski resorts go, deserves special mention! The shop has everything from the basics to the full range of luxuries and most things in between - a veritable Aladin's cave and with a selection far above that available in most resorts.
The only real downside of Stratton resort's shopping is that almost all the outlets close by 6pm, so opportunities are limited unless you cut into your skiing day.
The nearby town of Manchester boasts more than 100 stores covering every imaginable product and the best concentration of brand names you could hope for in one place. These include Versace, Timberland, Polo/Ralph Lauren, DKNY and van Heusen. Most other brands are stocked through other retailers in the area.
