A little piece of paradise for a boarder, this “Eden of the East” has an entire mountain of terrain parks. But, unlike Eden, it isn’t a private party pad for two. City folk are drawn here by varied terrain and friendly locals - the bars thrive and the energy’s electric.

Mount Snow has a colourful past – even if you don’t count the fountain that turned into a ski mountain (Fountain Mountain…). Founder Walt Schoenknecht brought tropical pools, Japanese springs and innovative lifts to this beautiful corner of Vermont’s Green Mountains, and once this was lauded as the biggest, most exciting resort in America.

One of the very first resorts on the East Coast, Mt Snow has always liked to be ahead of the pack. It built the East’s very first snow park back in the 90’s, and today it’s the only eastern resort with a mountain face entirely dedicated to terrain parks. Then there’s the Bluebird Express - the first six passenger bubble lift in this neck of the woods; a blue plexiglass beauty that zips you up 2050ft in just 7 minutes – keeping crowds as just something you find in the bars.

Snow is Vermont’s southernmost ski resort, making it the closest “big mountain skiing” to the Northeast’s major metropolitan areas, New York and Boston. While the wildernesses here are a welcome escape from the 9 to 5, the city set doesn’t feel deprived at the base station, which has 20 bars and restaurants and ski-in / ski-out hotels that run with the best of them. Putting even more on the menu, the charming towns of Dover and Wilmington are just 10 minutes away on the Moover shuttle.

What's the ski area like in Mont Snow?

Mt Snow’s 4 mountain areas (Main Face, North Face, Carinthia, and Sunbrook) feature 89 trails, nearly ¾ of which are blue runs. Beginners can travel the ski area’s length and breadth on Main Face’s top-to-bottom greens, while for a veteran, North Face offers up glades and double-black-diamonds that make many of America’s top 10s. Great for all levels - a back-to-base trail system makes it easy to meet up no matter you’ve been in the day.

The Launch Pad learner area has 2 carpets, a rope tow and the Discovery Shuttle, an easy-to-use chair. The Double and Tumbleweed Triple chairs are purely for newbies and the ski school’s Learn to Ski and Ride packages will soon have you linking turns like a natural. You’ll be skiing from the top of the mountain in no time, on gorgeous greens like Long John and Deer Run.

When narrow tree-lined runs were the norm, resort founder, Walt, decided to shake things up and cut wide paths into the trees like South Bowl and Sundance. These are just 2 in a piste map that’s 72% blue. Whether you’re lapping up the views in Sunbrook or testing yourself on North Face’s Fallen Timbers, intermediates have the run of these hills.

Almost the entire North Face area is composed of black diamonds, great for a challenge, with the 3600ft Summit Lodge serving up Dutch courage. Ripcord, the steepest run in resort, has bumps that will put the sturdiest black-diamond skier through their paces. It’s so hard-hitting they worked in an escape route, aptly called Second Thoughts... Other notables include Jaws (once known as “Jaws of Death”…) and Plummet, as well as some beautiful glades - The Trials off Olympic often holds excellent snow.

Last but by no means least, Mt Snow’s offerings for boarders are what really blow away the competition. The Carinthia side of the resort was a fully-fledged (if modest) ski area before being acquired by Snow in 1986. Today, it's entirely dedicated to terrain parks (12 of them), with over 125 features and everything from a 18ft superpipe to an 8ft mini pipe. This is one of the premier park areas on the planet.

The tourist office has been so confident in their snow conditions that they’ve offered a Snow Guarantee in recent years, offering a lift pass voucher to anyone who hasn’t been happy with the quality of the slopes after an hour.

Pack extra layers if you’re here at the beginning of the winter, when temperatures can be quite low. March tends to be a favourite month to visit with the golden combination of lots of snow, long days, milder temperatures and events like the Red Bull All Snow, Reggaefest and Duct Tape Derby.

Some of the best snowmaking in the industry gives you peace of mind for Christmas in Mount Snow, and this fun-loving resort sees events like the Grommet Rail Jam and concerts at the Snow Barn. Pick up easy last minute gifts in the valley’s eclectic gift shops.

What's Mont Snow like in the New Year?

The hills are alive with the sound of New Years in Mount Snow, where celebrations traditionally kick off with a torchlit parade and fireworks then end with dinner and dance parties. After a stiff drink at the Summit Lodge, make it your resolution to try black diamond Fallen Timbers.

What's Mont Snow like in Half-Term?

Families will have a blast on a Half Term in Mount Snow, with all kinds of things to ski, see and do together. The slopes are quieter as American schools don’t have this week off, and the long-haul flight back is just enough time to write up the adventures in the holiday diary.

What's Mont Snow like at Easter?

Though you might not know it while skiing in solitude and blissful bluebird conditions on Sunbrook, Easter in Mount Snow is as lively a time of year as any other. This week traditionally sees festivities like the Winter Brewer's Festival, Glade-iator mogul skiing contest and a Golden Easter Egg Hunt – with prizes like a season pass.

One of the few places in the world where kids under 6 can start boarding lessons, Mt Snow likes to do things a little differently for families. The ski school teaches mini boarders and skiers from as young as 3, and the day care in the main base area takes littlies from 6 weeks to 6. This has even offered special “Après for Kids” sessions, so that grownups can enjoy a few of the local microbrews with the other après skiers.

When everyone’s reunited, sugar waffles at the Waffle Cabin go down a treat and activities like sleigh rides and the cinema in Dover keep them off the iPads and having fun.

In recent years, big groups have been able to benefit from offers like getting the 16th lift ticket free – making trips more affordable. Whether you’re a group of skiers, snowboarders, cross country skiers, non-skiers or a complete mix – there’s more than enough to enjoy here. Get together for fun activities like tubing, bowling, sleigh rides and dog sledding or share stories of the day around a table at 1900’ Burger or Cuzzins.
