Savognin is laid out on both sides of the Julia River in the Surses Valley, with a medieval stone bridge providing access from one side to the other. Peering over the classic chalet buildings, the village can be identified by its three churches, often painted by Giovanni Segantini who lived here in the late 1800’s.

In the summer, mountain bikers and hikers come for the refreshingly traditional village and incredible landscape. In winter, the area buzzes with skiers, snowboarders, XC skiers and winter hikers.

There are two ski areas, the first and biggest is Savognin’s, which has 80km of pistes and nearby there’s Bivio with its 30km of terrain. This is the canton of Graubünden – a land of jagged peaks and rolling hills that’s also home to the iconic Swiss ski resorts of St Moritz, Lenzerheide and Klosters - all within an hour’s drive if you fancy exploring a different ski area one day.

To get here, the nearest airport is Zürich (2h drive) and rail travellers can connect to a bus service at Tiefencastel (10 min drive).

What is Savognin like for Beginner skiers?

The Flurin children’s slope (at the end of the Monas blue from Somtgant) has gentle obstacles and friendly characters for young beginners. Progressing from snowplough to parallel skiing is helped by the roomy nature of the pistes here – some as much as 200m wide. Blue run skiers can venture as high as Piz Martegnas for a couple of fabulous routes back to the village, featuring smooth ridges, wide fields and rolling hills – take the Traumpiste, Heidipiste, Tigia and Fops route or Traumpiste, Somtgant, Monas and Fops.

What is Savognin like for Intermediate skiers?

Over in Bivio, intermediates and up are best served by the Standart and Pustiva reds from the top station and the Valetta black piste halfway down. That’s not to say you can’t find gentler terrain, with a designated slow slope and blues like Tua. Intermediates have red runs from every lift, with favourites including the Piz Cartas’ wide Heidipiste, winding Laretig and the scenic Naladas from Crap Farreras.

What is Savognin like for Advanced skiers?

For a challenge, try the FIS Fugna piste (served by the Tigignas gondola and host of the men’s slalom).

What is Savognin like for snowboarding?

The Snowpark Somtgant serves up obstacles for beginners and more seasoned freestylers.

What is Savognin like for off-piste skiing?

Off piste, the 10km marked freeride area includes the ungroomed Crest’ Ota down into Radons – one of many descents you can access via lifts here.

What is Savognin like for cross country skiing?

Nordic skiers can enjoy 32km of groomed pistes. Prepared for both styles of cross-country skiing.

Savognin Restaurants

At dinner time, owner Florian will tell you which wine to pair with your food at Florian's Weinstube, while Allegra serve the best pizzas in town. For generous portions of steak, try Restaurant Bela Riva. PURA Casual Fine Dining, is focused on the of high-quality regional ingredients. Restaurant Tua is located opposite the Tua motorhome pitch in Bivio and invites you to linger on the sun terrace. The restaurant is run by the hosts Sonja and Ramis, who also run the restaurant La Veduta on the Julierhospiz. The restaurant is only open in the winter season.

Savognin Après Ski

Though it’s a small resort, there’s a good selection of places to visit when it strikes après o’clock. We like James Beach Bar for its deckchairs, mini-beach huts and live music in the evenings while Event bar Quadrin has two floors – one with a bar area and the other a comfy lounge. Look out for DJ sets at weekends and come back in the morning for croissants and coffee. The party tent at Roggi’s is popular, almost as popular as their amazing fondues… Also worth a visit is Jame’s Garage, a quirky watering hole with motor themed props where staff dress as mechanics. If you prefer après ski, the Alvaneu thermal baths are 15km away with indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, steam rooms and hot tubs

Savognin Activites for Non-skiers

Activity-wise, there’s an ice rink near the CUBE hotel and another in the centre of Bivio. For sledders, the Schlittada run from Somtgant takes you through a tunnel and forest over 7.5km. And if that isn’t long enough, try the Schlittada-Panoramica trail from Somtgant to the village church which totals 10.5km.
