St Anton Ski Resort
Brimming with traditional Austrian charm but with all the conveniences of a modern resort, St Anton's vast, high altitude ski area and vibrant atmosphere make it truly world class. It's one of the major international destinations that everyone must visit at least once (and is likely to return to frequently thereafter).
Two minutes from the train station and less than an hour's drive from Innsbruck airport, it's a conveniently accessible resort. The main village is traffic free and stretches for about 1km - dotted with hotels, restaurants, bars and shops to suit a wide range of tastes and budgets.
The long tradition of skiing stems in no small part from the St Anton area. To the amusement of locals, the parish priest in Lech first strapped on a couple of planks in 1895, starting a trend that has held ever since.
The competitive side of skiing is encouraged here, where the first ever ski race took place in 1904. Since the famous Arlberg-Kandahar Race in 1928 it has hosted various championships including the 2001 World Cup. Anyone can participate in the famous White Thrill race, which includes a 9km decent from Valluga. Children aren’t left out either - the ski schools organise weekly races and a slalom competition.
The Arlberg lift pass grants access to an extensive 280km of marked trails, not to mention 180km of fantastic off-piste. 84 lifts, easily accessed from the village transport over 125,000 per hour all over the Arlberg linked domain, which covers St.Anton as well as Pettneu, St. Christoph, Stuben, Lech, Zürs and Klösterle (aka Sonnenkopf). All areas are connected by an efficient (and free) shuttle bus.
With quality pistes, exhilarating powder, world-famous après ski and off-slope activities galore, St Anton has pretty much everything - it's even got a starring role in British Cinema - as the setting of rom-com 'Chalet Girl'.

Skiing/BoardingSkiing in St Anton
It's often said that if you learn to ski or snowboard here, you're likely to find any other resort an utter breeze... Just don't do a Bridget Jones (her memorable descent in 'Edge of Reason' took place on one of the more challenging Arlberg runs) and make sure to take advantage of the excellent tuition on offer.
Thanks to local legend Hannes Schneider, St Anton opened the first ski school in 1921. The Skischule Arlberg continues to provide excellent tuition today, so beginners are in good hands. There's a nursery slope at Nasserein as well as some beginner runs at Gampen. Once your confidence is building, your instructor will direct you to the easiest runs in the area. There are some nice ones in Kapall for snowploughing and the Osthang is a lovely, wide blue.
For intermediates, some quiet reds can be found in the Rendl area. Those with more confidence will enjoy the lengthy run from Schindler Spitze to Rauz, which has over 1000m of vertical.
This place is an absolute dream for advanced skiers with formidable steeps, mogul fields and awesome off-piste. With lifts now linking with the Lech ski area, the scope of terrain you can experience is immense. The runs from Valluga (particularly on the north face) are incredible and experts must ski the red Kapall, women's downhill run Karl-Schranz and the legendary black Kandahar. You can really come into your own on the off-piste here, which is some of the world's best by a long shot. The amazing STANTON Snowpark has a range of jumps, boxes and rails for everyone from beginners to pro’s to enjoy some quality freestyling as well as a funcross and a huge terrace if you prefer to watch the action.
The area also has about 40km of cross-country trails.
St Anton Apres Ski
The après ski here is absolutely legendary: the atmosphere is constantly buzzing and with a night bus running until 3am, you can really make the most of your evening. You'll find about 20 bars offering a variety of scenes, but to experience après ski at its best you can't leave until you've joined the masses and danced on the tables at world-famous Mooserwirt or The Crazy Kangaroo (Krazy Kanguruh). While it's reputation is lively (and the resort lives up to it) there are lots of options if you prefer a more sophisticated evening. A new addition, Murrmel offers a stylish lounge bar and nightclub for après ski in a more cosmopolitan setting.
In the 90+ restaurants you'll find food from around the world served in a variety of settings for a range of budgets. The Museum restaurant is a popular choice not only because of the fantastic food but also its charmingly traditional decor. It's also joined with the Museum which is well worth a look around if you have some spare time. For the best pizza in town, visit Pomodoro or have a curry at Kandahar.
Arlberg-well centre has indoor and outdoor pools, saunas and steam rooms if pampering is on the cards, while in the arl.rock centre you can climb indoors or out, play tennis, squash, volleyball or football or go bowling. If you want to appreciate the landscape further, there's a toboggan run which is floodlit in the evenings and an outdoor ice rink. There are lots of places to walk in the Arlberg area and you can book an expedition during the day or in torch-light at night. For a real treat have a horse-drawn sleigh ride or try paragliding.

Snow is historically good (average 7m snowfall) on St Anton's slopes and the season runs from December with good snow through to April. Although she does a pretty impressive job, Mother Nature's got a helping hand in the form of 194 snow cannons which cover 82 km of the Arlberg pistes, covering 95% of the piste with artificial snow in the St. Anton/St. Christoph area (including Rendl, Galzig, Kapall and Gampen).

Ski School Arlberg teaches children as young as 3 in fun and safe environments with fairytale playgrounds and magic carpets in St Anton, St Christoph and Nasserein. They also provide courses for teens who can learn to carve, race and freestyle and experience deep snow. Märchenwiese is a lovely gentle meadow for learners and there are some brilliant routes for the whole family to enjoy together around Nasserein.
