Overview: hotel description: Sport & Spa Hotel Strass description

The Strass is one of the most popular hotels in Mayrhofen, and spending a week here will soon make you see why.

Right next to the Penken gondola, in the centre of Mayrhofen, the Sport & Spa Hotel Strass has a pretty unbeatable location. The Penken is your gateway to the Zillertal – possibly the most famous ski area in Austria.

The Strass sprawls across several buildings, and the main hotel is made up of two wings, connected centrally by the main entrance and reception areas. Rooms are available in both the Strass and the Sport wings and, whichever one you stay in, you'll have access to all of the hotel's facilities.

That includes the superb spa and leisure facilities. Located in the Sport Wing, the impressive spa covers three floors and offers a Sauna World with Finnish, Roman and organic saunas for over 16s, plus a family spa where swimsuits are required. There are also hot tubs, relaxation areas, a fitness room and three swimming pools. For an extra treat, choose from the wide range of health and beauty treatments – everything from massages to facials is offered at the hands of the experienced staff.

If you’ve got energy to burn, head to the games room for billiards or table tennis, or challenge someone to a game of squash, while the kids have fun in the playroom.

Dining is always a delight in the extensive Sporthotel restaurant and winter garden, which serves tasty half board meals inspired by classic Austrian dishes and international favourites. And after dinner, you can head to the famous après-ski bar, Ice Bar, the sports bar with snooker, darts and table football, or the soundproofed Arena nightclub.

I stayed at the Strass hotel with a group of friends (10 of us in total) in med-March and we had an amazing holiday. The spa was lovely, we had a sauna and steam room on most days and used the pool and other facilities periodically. The water could have been a touch warmer for my liking but all-in-all a lovely spa area. There is a separate nude area as well (which also had hot tubs and other options) which we didn’t use. I had a massage at the end of the week which was great very reasonably priced too! There was a live singer/guitarist in the lobby every night too which was a nice touch. The reception and spa staff were great, and Sebastian looked after us well in the restaurant every evening. The food was fantastic! You get a new choice of options everyday (3-courses) and you also have a choice of about 7x options that stay the same, in case you don’t like the choices that evening. The traditional schnitzel for example was chosen more than once…delicious! One of my friends is a vegan and the food options for her were much better than expected and varied everyday. The drinks at the bar were good, but a tad overpriced in my opinion, so we went out for drinks in the town most evenings after dinner. The hotel was quite literally next to the main gondola that takes you directly to the main ski area. You’re also right next to the main ski hire shop (Brundl Sports) which had brilliant equipment to hire. If you want to go to the glacier, there is a bus stop close to the hotel (maybe 3min walk away) and it’s worth it!! Even just for one day to see/experience it. There are plenty of apres ski bars (all amazing) around the resort. Our favourites were Bruck n Stadl, Ice Bar and Happy End.
