Ski holidays in Slovenia

It's a wonder Slovenia doesn't have more of a name in the skiing world... Bordering the Austrian and Italian Alps, the country lives and breathes winter sports. It's a feast for the eyes as much as the skis, with vast lakes, fairy-tale forests, craggy peaks and tiny old villages. In fact it's Slovenia's lesser known status that makes ski holidays here so terrific: Prices tend to be lower and resorts quieter – all the more to enjoy the white stuff with.

Most popular ski resorts in Slovenia

Slovenia's so small that skiing a different resort each day is more than viable. The nation has dozens of small Alpine resorts but two stand head and shoulders above the rest in the popularity contest.

Bled's the country's most visited destination and is up there with the prettiest resorts in the Alps. Tourists for thousands of years have been mesmerised by the stunning lake, famous not only for its thermal waters but also the centrepiece island with its postcard-ready church. The slopes are brilliantly forgiving and tuition is top quality too, making this a fabulous place for families and beginners. The ski pass covers Vogel, Kobla and Straza as well as Bled which is a huge attraction to experienced skiers and boarders - there's a good amount of red and black terrain as well as some amazing off-piste and the mountain guides here charge a lot less than you'll find in France or Switzerland. The icing on the cake? With local slopes facing that gorgeous lake, you've got some of the most scenic skiing possible.

Kranjska Gora is another big name in Slovenia – while Bled is known worldwide as a year-round tourist destination, Kranjska's huge with snow lovers and has long history of winter sport. Near the Italian and Austrian boarders, this is somewhere you can ski the same standard of slopes of the big ski nations at a fraction of the price. The terrain poses more of a challenge than Bled and brings the best skiers on the planet to compete in the World Cup every year. The village itself is crammed with typical Alpine charm and with nearby Austria's legendary influence on the après ski (try the local blueberry brandy, borovničevec), it has the formula for an amazing ski holiday all round.
