Slovenia's so small that skiing a different resort each day is more than viable. The nation has dozens of small Alpine resorts but two stand head and shoulders above the rest in the popularity contest.
Bled's the country's most visited destination and is up there with the prettiest resorts in the Alps. Tourists for thousands of years have been mesmerised by the stunning lake, famous not only for its thermal waters but also the centrepiece island with its postcard-ready church. The slopes are brilliantly forgiving and tuition is top quality too, making this a fabulous place for families and beginners. The ski pass covers Vogel, Kobla and Straza as well as Bled which is a huge attraction to experienced skiers and boarders - there's a good amount of red and black terrain as well as some amazing off-piste and the mountain guides here charge a lot less than you'll find in France or Switzerland. The icing on the cake? With local slopes facing that gorgeous lake, you've got some of the most scenic skiing possible.
Kranjska Gora is another big name in Slovenia – while Bled is known worldwide as a year-round tourist destination, Kranjska's huge with snow lovers and has long history of winter sport. Near the Italian and Austrian boarders, this is somewhere you can ski the same standard of slopes of the big ski nations at a fraction of the price. The terrain poses more of a challenge than Bled and brings the best skiers on the planet to compete in the World Cup every year. The village itself is crammed with typical Alpine charm and with nearby Austria's legendary influence on the après ski (try the local blueberry brandy, borovničevec), it has the formula for an amazing ski holiday all round.
All ski resorts in Slovenia are in the north of the country. You’re not going to find the same size ski resorts as you would across the Alps however Slovenia still offers the opportunity for the perfect ski getaway. The most popular ski resort in Slovenia is Kranjska Gora. It has 20km of skiing, and if you’re feeling adventurous, you can drive to Bad Kleinkirchheim in Austria in under 30 minutes.
Slovenia has a shorter season than other European ski resorts. Generally running from December through to February. The low altitude mountains mean the snow melts quickly once spring starts.
There are 50 ski resorts in Slovenia. The largest is Mariborsko Pohorje – Maribor with 41.5km of pistes. There are lots of tiny ski resorts off the beaten track in Slovenia, so small in fact Pungrat – Besnica has just one slope and one rope tow.
The best ski resort in Slovenia has got to be Kranjska Gora. It has the perfect mix for every type of skier – fantastic value for money and easy access to the slopes. Kranjska Gora is an excellent option for a family’s first-time skiing. Are you going away on a group ski holiday? There are several bars to enjoy apres and Vopa Pub has DJs and is open until late.
Slovenia’s ski resorts are great for beginner ski holidays. With much smaller ski areas than its neighbouring resorts in the Alps, Slovenia is the perfect place to get started. Check out the Bohinj ski area with six green runs and 32 blue runs.
