Overview: apartment description: Ruka Village Hotel & Apartments description

Looking at the Ruka Village Hotel & Apartments, you can see it was designed with skiers in mind. For starters, the location is perfect – in the middle of the pedestrian village, less than a minute's walk from the lifts. And next door, there’s a shopping centre where you can stock up at the supermarket and play a few games in the bowling alley.

Then there's the apartments themselves – they're typically Scandi in style and have plenty of space, and you can choose the set-up that suits you, whether that's a studio on bed & breakfast basis or a bigger self-catering apartment. They’ve all got that Finnish staple, a private sauna that's perfect for a spell of après-ski relaxation. And to step it up another notch, pick a 3-bedroom apartment and you can sit in your own outdoor hot tub on the balcony, soaking up the warmth and views.

Mealtimes can be as flexible as you like. Stick with bed & breakfast or self-catering to prep your own meals – or try out the local restaurants – or upgrade to self-catering plus or half board to get your evening meals included with your holiday.

Nestled in the Finnish hills on the borders of Lapland, just south of the Arctic Circle, a visit here is a once-in-a-lifetime experience (and many return again and again). Sometimes called the ‘gateway to Lapland’, the resort was founded in the winter of 1954 when the first slope opened. Since then it’s flourished there are now 35 groomed runs and over 500km of cross country trails. Most packages have flights that go via Helsinki and land at Kuusamo Airport. From here it’s an easy 30-minute road transf...
Whilst larger resorts can be a bit overwhelming, the compact, unintimidating ski area here is just right for first-timers. Many of the lifts are beginner-friendly t-bars and Ruka also boasts the largest and oldest ski school in Finland. 41% of the runs are suitable for beginners – including the longest at 1.3km (blue 27 on the piste map). We also like number 7, which is a confidence-boosting green that takes you back to the village. Intermediates are just as well catered for with 43% of slopes classified red...
Ruka’s well known in Finland for its vibrant and friendly après ski, with a number of bars, pubs and restaurants to suit all tastes. We love Ruka Peak (previously voted the best wild game restaurant in Finland) where you can sip on cocktails and sample refined dishes in a smart, cosy lounge with stunning arctic views. If you’re feeling adventurous, don’t miss the Riipinen Wild Game Restaurant where reindeer, elk, bear and arctic fish are nearly always on the menu. The aptly named Classic Pizza Ruka has a fri...

"Good value for money and right next to the lifts"

Richard Harrigan, Essex

A nice place. Really modern, part of a newish block. It was very cold outside (-18 degrees!) but the apartments were nice and warm and there was a sauna adjacent to the bathroom. They came with a kitchen and everything you needed, a dishwasher, a hob, etc. Lovely apartments and good value. They are right next to the lifts which is ideal if you are a beginner. There is a supermarket behind the apartments in the block next door and that was well equipped – we ate in most of the time. There is also a restaurant in the hotel next door, we had breakfast there and ate a meal there too, it was good, sort of American grill type food. The only reason I wouldn’t go back is that it was so cold and dark while we were there, best to look at the weather beforehand and go at a different time of year.
