Overview: apartment description: Résidence Les Épinettes description

If you like the independence of a self-catering stay but fancy some extra facilities, Résidence les Épinettes is right on the money. Outside, the chalet-style building's got a traditional stone and wood look, and inside things are modern and bright. Go for a snug studio fit for two, or get the whole gang together in a roomy apartment. Either way, you’ll have your own balcony or terrace, plus a good-sized kitchenette perfect for throwing some easy meals together whenever you get peckish.

You’ll be in a pretty great spot too – it’s only a couple of minutes’ stroll to the lifts, so getting up on the mountain each morning's a breeze, and you can easily wander into Vaujany’s centre if you feel like switching it up and eating out in the evening. The best part? When you’re not on the slopes, there’s a heated indoor pool you can do some leisurely laps in, as well as a sauna, steam room and a small fitness room if you want to keep on top of your exercise schedule while you’re away.

Vaujany was just a tiddly farming village until the late eighties; then the EDF hydroelectric plant bought a chunk of its land and the locals sensibly decided to invest the money they’d made into a ski lift... They connected the village up with Alpe d’Huez and all of a sudden it was part of one of the biggest, best ski areas in France. Looking out to the Grandes Rousses massif, you still get the authentic character of centuries past – with an old church and farmhouses of timber and stone along roads that...
The local Montfrais area has a gaggle of easy-going terrain, with gentle greens like Ecureuils and a magic carpet to nudge you up the beginner’s slope. Take the Vallonnett chair to reach the lovely Edelweiss blue run that streams down to link up with the Vaujanete run to La Villette – a gorgeously wide stretch through trees. Early intermediates will find some brilliant reds, a favourite being the Belvedere from Dome des Rousses which is wide and cruisey, forking off onto Bartavelle for more easy skiing. T...
Anyone with a full area lift pass simply has to stop off at Folie Douce in Alpe d’Huez, if just to get an eyeful of the ‘sweet madness’ it’s so famous for. Closer to home, the atmosphere is more peaceful than party-full, but you can still find a couple of good watering holes like Arsen’s Café Pub (with big screens showing sporting events) and Table de La Fare (super sun terrace) near the lift station. The Belgian L’Etendard bar does happy hours, and Le Shooters stays open latest until 2am with live m...
