The two bed apartment was cleanly presented, and equipped well to basic level (no oven, DVD player nor kettle for the essential English tea!). Spread across a number of villages and hamlets, the Serre Chevalier valley’s not your usual alpine resort – but that’s what we like about it. While you won’t find a main hub of restaurants, bars and accommodation, a stay in one of the villages gives you a more ski-focussed, budget friendly week on the mountains. Briancon, Chantemerle, Villeneuve and Monêtier are the four main bases, each with their own character, but all with terrific lift access to the mountain. Typical French Briancon sits at the fa...
With some of the best conditions in the French Alps (80% of the slopes are above 2000m) the ski area includes wide-open, sunny plateaus, scenic tree lined runs and a perfectly groomed blanket of white beneath your skis or board. The piste can be accessed from all four towns and nursery slopes run from each allowing beginners to gain some confidence in peace - with help from the excellent ski schools in the area they’ll be progressing higher in no time! Beginners will find a number of gentle blues and steady ...
There’s never a dull moment here and with four different towns oozing character you’re sure to find something to suit you. Ski down the home run at Chantemerle to find the popular station bar where après ski begins with a happy hour or if you’re based in Villeneuve, the Grotto at the base of the slopes is the place to be for that après ski buzz! 1420 in Briancon is perfect for an evening of sophisticated drinks. The liveliest après is found at Villeneuve with a number of bars for evening drinks - The Frog ...

"Booked these a couple of times <- that should say it all!"

The apartments have quite a good central location in-between 2 ski lifts. There’s a shopping centre over the road with a new supermarket and a couple of quiet bars and just up the road there’s a fast food takeaway place which is quite handy. La Grotte (a really good bar we always go back to) is only 6-10 minutes walk and it takes 5-10 minutes to get into the old town. We’ve probably had 3-4 different rooms during the times we’ve stayed here and every one has been well equipped with a good kitchen. They’re not brand new but they’re clean and warm and make a good base.

We had a really good holiday, the ski lifts were quite far away but not too far (about 5-10 mins). It depends what runs you want as you can also get the bus which stops at the end of the road. We found an English bar in the next village along which was quite good and easy to get to, it’s just the next stop on the bus. There were a few bars in the village itself but they were a bit quieter. Inside was quite spacious, even though we were a group of 6 adults the space in the living room and kitchen was adequate. We had a double bed in the master room, bunk beds in the second room and a double pull out in the living room. The toilet and bathroom were fine. There’s a supermarket in the village if you want to keep it cheap and self cater and there are also restaurants there as well (there’s a good local one where we had amazing steaks). We were all in our twenties and enjoyed it, I’d definitely recommend it for groups of similar ages and even older groups. It’s in a quiet enough area that you can have a quiet holiday and if you want to go out you can head off and find the local bars.

A group of us stayed in a couple of apartments for my Stag do and we had a very good week! The apartments are basic but clean and warm; we actually ended up spending a lot of time in them. There were four people staying in two apartments and they had a double bed in one and 2 settee beds in each one. Each apartment had a kitchenette and all the cutlery we needed was there. It also had a hoover and plenty of storage space for all of our clothes and stuff. We were on the ground floor and had a balcony which was nice. It’s a bit of a walk to the lifts, there are two lifts, a gondola that went up the mountain which was a good walk in ski gear (about 100m or more) and the main central lift station was about the same distance. The supermarket is close by where we got stuff for breakfast but we ate out in the evenings. The nightlife is fairly convenient, there’s a really nice restaurant called MoJos which is run by a couple from England who gave us a warm welcome every night, they had a set 3 course menu with a mix of traditional French food and also did a good steak. Everything they did was all really good quality and not too expensive either. Right behind the apartments really close to them is a pizza takeaway place that was really good, it’s on a little promenade and there are a couple of restaurants there too. There are quite a few quiet French pubs in the area but there’s one we liked called La Grotte which was really lively and had theme nights. There were quite a lot of groups like us staying there, I didn’t see many kids around but it wasn’t loud so wouldn’t be bad for families, there just isn’t much in the area for children to do.

"Comfortable but basic apartment"

The two bed apartment was cleanly presented, and equipped well to basic level (no oven, DVD player nor kettle for the essential English tea!). For those driving, we were impressed with the heated driveway which kept garage access ice free! The reception/public area has very limited opening hours. However, the apartment had two major defects which the staff should have sorted before arrival, although they were done quickly once highlighted. The apartment is quite small, so just ok for 6 but only suitable for 8 if very, very friendly! The block is situated at one end of Villeneuve, close to an excellent boulangerie and (expensive) supermarket. For a family, allow 15 mins to walk to the nearest ski starting point if in ski kit, although the frequent "navette gratuite" helps with tired soles with frequent service.
