Overview: chalet description: Äkäs Cabins description

These cosy, traditional open-plan log cabins, are in the most scenic and peaceful, wooded location in the unspoiled Lappish village of Äkäslompolo.

Excellent Location

Staying here you'll be close to all the local amenities. The Äkäs Hotel, a hub of local entertainment, has a popular bar, dance floor, restaurant and night club. It's about five minute's walk from the cabins and where you'll enjoy you're meals if you're staying on bed and breakfast or have opted for half board. Each cabin has a small kitchenette and the well-stocked supermarket is about 10-15 minute walk away.

Outdoor adventures

The cross-country ski trails start from just outside the cabins, around 314 kilometres of ski tracks wind through the surrounding snowy landscape surrounding Ylläs. The downhill ski area is reached in a few minutes by ski bus (payable locally) which gives you access to a variety of different slopes. Skiing in Lapland is a unique experience, you can ski around the pristine pistes, and even have a go at night skiing earlier in the winter season - the pistes are generally open until late afternoon but are floodlit so the slopes stay open even after sundown.

During your break, check out some of our fantastic optional extras available from Ylläs. Whizz through the snowy fells by snowmobile, or enjoya husky safari through the forest, you can even book an overnight excursion in the Ice Hotel.

Sauna and relaxation

No Finnish holiday is complete without experiencing the sauna and these cabins do not disappoint - each one has a private sauna for you to come back to relax in after days out exploring. The cabins also have a fireplace, so you can warm up in the comfort of your cabin after skiing, snowmobiling, or sledding through the wilderness. In addition, you'll have free use of the swimming pool, saunas, and fitness room in the Äkäs Hotel.

This gorgeous Lapland resort (pronounced “U-las”) has welcomed skiers since the 1930s and is the biggest of the 35 ski areas in Finland, home to the country’s longest slope, the 3km Jättipitkä run (which translates to ‘enormously long’!). The resort is split into two villages on either side of the region’s highest “fell” - a smooth mountain rising above the treeline. Both villages have remained true to their roots - Ylläsjärvi in the south and Äkäslompolo in the north – and both are authentic, b...
With 63km of downhill slopes, the skiing is fairly compact although over 300km of designated tracks make this one of the best cross-country destinations in the world. The uncrowded, perfectly groomed slopes are a beginner’s dream and make learning to ski a fun and relaxing experience. The ski schools meet on both sides of the mountain and speak excellent English with group lessons normally having small class sizes to give a personal feel. Early intermediates will love the wide, cruising runs which are perf...
Both villages are sleepy and traditional so while there are nice places to go for a drink, those looking for a European party scene might be somewhat disappointed. The focus is more on relaxation and entertainment away from the slopes of which there’s more than enough to keep all ages very happy. The Akäs hotel is most popular for a few drinks with a dance floor and club inside, while the restaurants in the resort serve all kinds of local delicacies – reindeer and freshly caught fish are both highly recommend...

"Akas Hotel - Romantic Log Cabins in Akaslompolo"

Larissa Postolan
4/ out of 5
So - point 1 I must make is everyone has to go to Lapland and some point in their life. This is a fantastic place for children and adults alike, and who doesn't want to act like a big kid in 2ft snow drifts? Akaslompolo for us was a fantastic choice - you have a lovely little village with all amenities close by within walking distance of the Akas, a lake that is frozen over during the winter..a great spot to try and see the Northern Lights as very little light polution (we ere lucky enough to get a great show twice while we were there!) and i'd certainly say that if you want a trip that isnt just based on skiing/boarding then stay on this side of the Yllas fell. Buses are available to the ski reports from the Akas hotel so getting to the runs are easy anyway, but on this side you get more oprions for other activities. In relation to the Akas and the log cabins - great location and very quiet, lots of pretty scenery and snow! The log cabins themselves are basic - but clean, warm, have a log burner with unlimited access to wood. A useful kitchenette with most things you would need. The cabins are represented as suitable for upto 3 people, however I would say any more than 2 and you would be tripping over eachother! Very cosy and comfortable otherwise :-) The main Akas hotel is a short walk from the cabins, and has a bar/restaurant, although I would recommend Julli's for food which is a short walk into town. (especially the porterhouse steak for 2! yummy). Our tour operaters were Inghams and gave a welcome meeting at the beginning of the week to let us know about the area, what tour options were available to us etc and were lovely and friendly people. Some great activity options are available - we would really recommed ski-dooing and visiting the Ice Hotel, all which are provided by Inghams. To summerize - a fantastic trip which we hope to do again in the future with a larger group of friends. What a magical place, can't fault it!
