Glacier Skiing Top après Lots of activities

Spectacular views of Mont Blanc aren’t the only bonus of the glacier - this ‘upside down’ ski resort is one of the most snow-sure in the Alps, so much so that you can ski here in the summertime. Much loved for its après ski, the town's main strip is bursting with some of the best bars in the mountains.

Grenoble is the closest airport with a transfer time of just under 2 hours, making the resort accessible by road. The resort was first used for skiing as early as 1925 when the first ski tow was built. The “Les Deux Alpes”, as we know it today, was established in 1946. It is commonly assumed that the name is derived from the two mountains on either side of the town when in reality the name stems from the two villages on either side of the settlement: Mont De Lans and Venosc. The resort is compact, and you’...
There are plenty of beginner slopes on the front face with runs like les Vikings and Les Gentianes for those learning to ski. The great thing about Les Deux Alpes is that there are some terrific beginner slopes higher up the mountain so new skiers can experience the benefits of skiing at altitude. The Cretes area at 2100m is the favourite spot for ski schools, with the ski escalator a welcome aid to those learning to ski. The run home at the end of the day used to have a fearsome reputation for being overcrowded...
You don’t have to look far to find good après in Les Deux Alpes. One of the best bars in resort is Pano bar, this slopeside restaurant, based at 2,600m comes alive at happy hour between 3 pm and 5 pm every day with discounted drinks and a DJ set that will vibrate through your whole body. At the bottom of the piste, Umbrella bar is a great place to keep the party going. If you want to take the night further then Smithy’s is the place to go, with great modern music as well as live entertainment on several night...

Absolutely fantastic hotel, I would recommend it to anyone and would happily stay here again. It’s at the right end of town so location was very very good. Breakfasts were superb with big fresh croissants in the morning and there were plenty of places for lunches and dinners in the resort. Our room was very spacious and the Wi Fi was very good!

The best thing about the hotel was that the staff were really good. One problem was that it didn’t have a lift, so if you were staying on the top floor you had to drag your bag all the way up the stairs. The room was a simple double but had everything we needed. They did continental breakfasts each morning which were very pleasant, again all we needed to get us ready for the day ahead. The chair lift was probably about a five minute walk away, so not too far. I’m not sure about the other side of the mountain because there wasn’t enough snow to ski it while we were there.

"Superb hotel for families"

A superb hotel, probably the best aspect of this year’s ski holiday! I would 100% recommend it to other families. Our quad room was really nice and big, very clean and warm, with comfortable beds. We loved the continental breakfasts – they’d bring a basket of croissants to your table so there wasn’t a scrum for them and then we’d have be the usual breads, jams, meat and cheese as well as all the juices, teas and coffees. A lot of reviews I’d read said that the hotel was far from the main lift but what they don’t mention is that the Serre Palas is only a 5 minute walk to the Diable lift. There’s a good ski boot room where they give you a locker, so everything’s very safe. They also lock your luggage up on your leaving day which is handy. One thing we really liked was that the Serre Palas is in a quiet area of the town (not quite on the edge but nearly) so even though the resort was busy, we had no noise at night at all. If you want a meal out, I would recommend Le Doume which was just along the road and did great pizzas.

"Perfect for us! Couldn’t have been better!"

We had a fantastic week here, a really, really good holiday! The people in the hotel were lovely and friendly. I’m glad we were staying here and not in the bigger Hotel Aalborg – as a French, family run hotel this one was more personal and had a nice mix of French and English guests. Having read reviews I thought the hotel was going to be a bit Spartan but we were very comfortable. Breakfasts were really good, with lots of rolls and croissants that we’d fill with ham and cheese (have been skiing since in a hotel where breakfasts weren’t as plentiful). We stayed in two twin rooms, each was en-suite with a shower over the bathtub. We got our skis and boots from the ski hire shop in Hotel Aalborg and left them there, so we could walk to the hotel in the morning, pick up our equipment and go to the lifts from there. There is a boot room at the Serre Palas but I don’t like to walk around in ski boots if I can help it.

"Nice hotel and breakfast not far to walk"

Mrs Eden, Elslack

The hotel was good, we had twin beds rather than a double but the room was fine and very clean. They had a good ski locker room and it’s walking distance to get into the town and up the slopes. The hotel is also really close to a Spar shop and all the restaurants and bars which makes things easy. It doesn’t have a lounge, so you just go to your locker, put your skis away and then go up to your room. We had B&B and the breakfast was fine with cereal, croissants, bread etc. They did some cooked things like egg on toast but I don’t remember having a full cooked breakfast. When we had a really early get up for the way home, the staff made us an early breakfast which was really nice of them.

"Overall a good value hotel"

Sam Eden, Elslack

One thing that comes to mind which this hotel did really well is that before you even get inside, there’s a really big ski store with individual lockers. It’s also a short walk to the main lift from which you can ski straight up, which was a bonus. The hotel does a B&B basis and the breakfast was good (I really liked the fact that they had absolutely huge croissants!), it was fairly continental but what they did, they did really well. In terms of eating out in the evenings, the hotel is close to an excellent restaurant which is literally a 2 minute walk from the hotel. It’s called Le Cellier and had a reasonably priced menu of proper French dishes, we really liked it and visited a couple of times during our stay. There was an older retired lady who served the breakfast and stayed behind the scenes, she was very helpful if we needed anything, for example one night we were looking for a corkscrew and she sorted us out straight away. The rooms were standard, clean and tidy; nothing massively exciting and I’d probably give that aspect a 3/5. It wasn’t a major disappointment that we ended up with a twin, that’s just the way the hotel works. There was a very small bar area which had enough stools for two people tops, but we never saw it open. There wasn’t a lounge area at all although we didn’t really miss it. The only negative point is that the building is almost next door to a youth hostel where they had lots of drunken teenager types who we had noise from one night.
