Up in the Rhaetian Alps at 1883m, rubbing shoulders with Trentino and Lombardy, the purpose-built town of Tonale is one of the highest resorts in the country. With a top altitude of 3016m, snow is guaranteed throughout the season here, as there are lots of Italian sunshine. Milan and Verona are the nearest serving airports, where you can find coach, taxi and train connections to the resort. As a beginner, having to take loads of lifts to reach easy runs can be a bit daunting. You don’t have to worry about this here, with most blue runs near hotels and bars, for those all-important hot chocolate breaks. Nursery slopes with magic carpets let learners work on snowploughs, in short, manageable bursts - when you begin to feel more comfortable, take the Valena chair lift for a couple of mid-length blues. 60% of the slopes have been carefully crafted for intermediates, leading in all directions for ...
Of course, one of the best things about Italy is its delectable delicacies. Whether you're looking for fast food to fill you after a hard days skiing (try La Torretta for their filling pizza) or a more authentic, native dining experience (El Bait serves local, genuine cuisine), you won't be disappointed. Il Focolare is well worth a visit for classic pasta and tiramisu – make sure you book early! Eating on a budget is easy, with fast food dishes from 5€, and you can usually grab a three-course meal for about 10...

"Friendly hotel, very clean!"

The Grimes Family, Bristol
4/ out of 5
The hotel was extremely clean, to the point that it was a little OCD (they kept moving our personal items and mixing up our jewellery etc.). Staff were very friendly and accommodating. The location was fine. My husband used a locker room near the shop that we got our skis from (it worked out at about 20€ for the week) because it was easier than walking with children in ski boots. It probably took about 10 minutes to walk each way. The food was ok and the children were happy with it, though the vegetarian meals were slightly bland, not quite what you’d class as Italian vegetarian food. They had a sauna and solarium but we didn’t end up using them.

"Clean, well run hotel"

They have a nice downstairs spa, sauna, jacuzzi and so forth and the food was usually a typical Italian 3 course meal including something like soup or antipasti for a starter (you chose your main meal the morning/day before so you didn’t have to wait for food in the evenings). I shared a twin room with my daughter and we met another family out there (a couple with a daughter who was a similar age to mine) and they had a twin with another bed in the room. Depending on which slopes you want, it’s a 10 minute walk to the nearest lift which took you on a nice long run or a 15-20 minute walk to the nursery slopes. It’s a fairly small hotel – there’s no big hotel nightlife but if you want a quiet hotel to come back to, it’s perfect.
