This traditional mountain village sits at a high 1930m in Austria’s Oztal valley. Obergurgl is renowned as a snow sure resort with some of Austria’s highest altitudes, making it well worth a visit if you’re travelling particularly early or late in the season. Scattered with upmarket accommodation, the village itself blends a luxury touch with a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. It has a vibrant character, and alpine charm with many a Tyrolean tradition found in the town and on the mountains in popular slope...
Many highly regarded ski schools are on hand for beginners – there's a gentle learning slope at the resort for picking up the basics. A mini club and ski kindergarten are available at the Obergurgl Ski School where skiing is taught in a fun and safe environment for little ones just starting. The Top-express Gondola takes you to Hochgurgl's higher altitudes. Wide pistes and amazing snow make this the perfect area for progressing beginners to test their abilities. After steadying those legs, work your way up t...
The après starts on the mountains where there are many bars ready to serve skiers that well-deserved pick me up of warm glühwein. The skis come off at the lively Nederhütte, just above the resort, where merry skiers mingle with drinks accompanied by live music before getting up on the tables when the real party starts. The gondola next to the bar will take those a little unsteady on their skis back to the resort - when these close, skidoos run everyone back to base. Hohe Mut is another favourite amongst sk...

"friendly staff, tasty buffet dinners"

It was myself, my husband and our 3 children staying here over Christmas week. We had a bit of a thing with rooms when we first got there – we booked a suite and a double when we got there it worked out best for the children to be in the suite, but they had put us with the children and said we’d have to pay more. However the suite was absolutely fantastic and the double room was fine – they were quite a distance apart which wouldn’t have worked with smaller children but ours were teens so it was fine (and we probably could have requested that they be closer). It was 50 something steps to get to the dining room, so be warned when you’ve got tired legs after skiing all day. Otherwise the staff were very friendly and helpful. We had half board and food was nice and very mixed with a buffet rather than meals. There’s also free wine and beer which was good – the main thing was that the kids always found plenty to eat. We had Christmas dinner there which wasn’t very traditional Austrian/British, just a dinner really. There was a blizzard on Christmas day so no one could go up the mountain, but that’s where all the restaurants are for lunch and the hotels don’t cater for lunch time so we were stuck in the village and ended up having to queue for a slice of pizza! The location is fantastic, it’s a really good place where you can ski basically back to the door and just walk down to the village. It doesn’t really look like a hotel but more like a Ski Hire shop as it had a Ski Hire shop and was built backwards.
