2300m at the top of the Three Valleys ski area, VT is the highest ski resort in Europe and part of the biggest linked ski area on the planet. While it's a place for people who, above all else, love to ski, you'll also find some of the country's best après including the legendary Folie Douce, as well as weird and wonderful activities like the 1300m Tyrolienne zip wire. At the summit of the largest ski area in the world and bordering the Vanoise National Park, this is a spectacular place to ski and board. Beginners are well catered for on nursery slopes by the Rond Point des Pistes, where the magic carpets often don't require a lift pass. Kids will love the Junior Park, while the Musaraigne and Campagnols runs in the beginner's area and the new Deux Combes green are perfect to practice on. With a bit more confidence, take the Pionniers or Plein Sud chairs for some cruisy lon...
The après ski here easily rivals other top resorts in the Alps. If you haven't already had the Folie Douce experience, head just under the Plein Sud lift where the "dancefloor on top of the world" is heaving from 3 pm. Another place to party is Bar 360 at the end of the blue Moraine run, which always has live music and cheaper drinks. Back in town, Rue de Gebroulaz is a hub of lively bars where O'Connells is the local Irish pub. The Frog and Roastbeef is a long-time favourite of Brits. L'Eclipse on Galerie Caro...

Can’t fault it too much, Staff and service was excellent. We had requested 3 single rooms in the triple room, but we got a double and a single. Hotel offered us a new room which was good. The food was excellent! One night is a fondue night, but that wasn’t organised well due to lack of skewers. Ski access can be challenging. You have to walk up a steep hill to access the slopes. Skiing in is tricky as you can miss it as it’s a narrow gap. Great location, great hotel. Would just mention the ski in element can be tricky.

Really great hotel. Lovely reception on arrival- we had a bottle of champagne waiting in our room as we told them it was our honeymoon. The bar is lovely- all traditional wood and sheepskins with a log fire. Great service if a tad pricey. The restaurant was out of this world. The service was brilliant and the the food was 4* quality every night- a really good selection throughout the week - we had no desire to eat elsewhere as the food was so good. Breakfasts were also very good with a great choice and decent coffee. Ski in and out- even on a snowboard it was all but 2 minutes walk. One complaint was the tiny locker room- very cramped. The lockers are very good and secure with high tech locks but there is no space and getting ready each morning is carnage. Rooms are small and not particularly fancy but have tv, dryer and a bath which is a real bonus. Bed was v comfy and generally the room was fine. The bijou spa area has a hot tub and sauna and steam room. Overall a really great hotel. The restaurant and bar make it.

"Wonderful hotel, incredible food"

The Sherpa is really, really good and probably has the best food in a ski hotel anywhere. The food really was fantastic, it was mostly traditional French stuff and they did a fondue night which was good. You always had soup and a salad and you just gave the guy your choice for the main course at breakfast so they knew what to cook. The sweet table was incredible with something like 25-30 different sweets. People from the town often came up to use the restaurant but sometimes didn’t get a seat as it was so popular and the guests nearly always ate in. The rooms were small but very nicely looked after with lovely thick robes. The health suite was also small but very good. There’s a lovely little bar and they did a nice champagne reception on one of the nights (I think the Sunday). It’s ski in ski out which was the main reason I chose it. There’s a very good boot room and drying system where you hang your boots upside down and when you put your boots on in the morning they’re not only dry but warm! We had very good service all week and the staff were always keen to look after us. We went over on the overnight train and got there at 9 in the morning, thinking we were going to have to dump our stuff in storage somewhere but within half an hour our room was ready!
