Overview: hotel description: Hotel La Terra Nova, Plagne Centre description

The Terra Nova Hotel is superbly located in Plagne Centre. Right at the foot of 225km of piste, you can jump straight on the chairlift in the morning and ski back to the door at the end of the day. All of the rooms face either the slope or the valley, so you’ll wake up to marvellous views each day. And the quad and interconnecting rooms are ideal for families.

All your meals are served in the hotel's restaurant, which has fantastic panoramic views of the slopes. Take your pick from the buffet, and toast the ski day with unlimited free wine.

You’ll also have free access to the hotel-run kids’ club, supervised by qualified, English-speaking staff. There are lots of games, crafts and storytelling to keep them smiling all day long. And while they're having fun, you can squeeze in a few extra runs on the mountain.

In the French Alps' Savoie region, La Plagne was established in the early sixties and now consists of 11 villages: 7 purpose built villages and 4 traditional villages. The aptly named Plagne Centre at the heart of the resort is the main hub of shops, restaurants and après ski. Just underneath lies Plagne 1800, a cluster of chalets spread across a steep hillside. Higher up are Aime-la-Plagne, Plagne-Soleil and Plagne-Villages, all accessible via chairlifts from Plagne Centre. Plagne Bellecote rests over a l...
There are plenty of nursery slopes with access to free beginner lifts and a wide choice of different ski schools for those new to skiing. The slopes around the Belle Plagne area are particularly suitable for beginners. The blue run linking Les Bauches to Montchavin provides a manageable step up in difficulty from the nursery slopes. For those who class themselves as intermediate skiers, La Plagne is paradise. 77% of the runs are graded either blue or red. Particular favourites are the run from La Grand Roch...
It might not rival Val d'sere or Verbier for their wild party scenes, but this is an exceptional resort for unique après ski opportunities. Try snowmobiling at night, ice climbing in Champagny, husky sledding, paragliding, extreme tobogganing and more! One experience not to be missed is the bobsleigh track, used for Olympic training. There are various ways you can choose to go down it, but they are all guaranteed to give you a thrill as you will hurtle down at speeds ranging from 80 km/hr up to a lightening 120...

The hotel was good; it has a great location as you could ski literally to the door. It would be a great place to stay as a beginner as the slope is a really easy nursery slope. The food was absolutely fine. Our room was also fine; the place probably could do with some sort of updating but overall it was fine. The only major problem was that there were only two lifts, and 90% of the time only one of them was working. We were up on the 5th or 6th floor and because there were so many people staying in the hotel we were sometimes waiting forever for the lifts or had to climb the stairs. They got engineers in but were struggling to keep them both going.

"Not 5* but perfectly adequate"

We had a very good week here. The staff were friendly and the food was really good with a lot of choice. Really enjoyed the breakfasts - meats, croissants, scrambled eggs… it was difficult to stop for breakfast to go skiing! They also put on an effort to celebrate as it was Christmas week. The Terra Nova’s not the lap of luxury, but I didn’t expect it to be – it was definitely comfortable enough. We had two rooms which were fine, again not 5* luxury but perfectly warm and comfortable. The location is genuinely ski in / ski out which was great.

"Mediocre"

Were we were dropped was hardly convenient and we ended up having to lug stuff up some stairs, so it’s worth being prepared for a bit of lugging when you arrive. Inside was rather tatty and could have done with a spruce up, but we weren’t paying a lot for it. To get to the ski slopes, you have to walk about 50 yards in boots and then you ski out and away. The hotel is actually on a nursery slope, so it’s really good for beginners. It’s only a very short walk to Plagne Centre to get to all the shops and ski hire. The food varied tremendously from outstanding to mediocre, but on average it was fine. Some nights it would be like school dinners and others it would be oysters. The staff were excellent - outstanding, very friendly and helpful. Our room was fit for purpose, you don’t go to a hotel like this expecting to find a presidential suite.

"No complaints, great views"

We definitely had a good holiday in the Hotel Terra Nova – I liked the restaurant, our room was spacious and clean and had a nice view from the window. The interior is more traditional but it was refurbished. Our breakfasts were continental with a lot of French pastries etc., dinner was a buffet which could have got a bit boring but it was fine for a week. It’s ski in, ski out and the access is pretty easy (maybe not if you’re a complete beginner but otherwise fine). I used the sauna which is free to use but you have to book it in advance. They also have storage rooms for your skis/boards which is useful. I stayed here with my husband – it’s not an overly romantic place but it was OK for us, it seemed to be an especially good place for families with children.

"All great, highly recommended"

It’s fairly basic (as a lot of ski hotels are) but the rooms are always very clean and reasonable. The food is good; the best thing about the hotel is definitely the location, which is ski in / ski out. Everything is incredibly handy for families, which is why we like it and if you have younger kids, there’s a daytime nursery thing.
