Overview: hotel description: Hotel La Tarentaise description

For a traditional hotel with fab slope access, the Tarentaise hits the nail on the head. It sits right on a green run, so even beginners can ski to and from the door once they’ve learnt the basics.

Things are simple and welcoming inside, and the rooms really make the most of the location too, with views of either the valley or piste. But the heart of the hotel is the bar and lounge area, where you can flop on a sofa by the big stone fireplace, play a game of pool or take your drink out to the terrace to watch other skiers and boarders whizz past.

Rustled up an appetite? The restaurant here has you covered morning and night, with big buffet breakfast spreads and 3-course evening meals. You can even pop in and pay for an à la carte meal at lunchtime if you fancy it.

3 Valleys ski area Excellent ski schools Lively après ski

Meribel has a special place in many Brit's hearts – not simply because it’s right in the middle of the biggest ski area on Earth. A resort for long ski days, ski-boot-stomping après and cosy chalets, there’s a great deal to do and ski here, which is why many of us have been coming back for decades.

Meribel's location is tricky to beat, slap bang in the centre of the mammoth Three Valleys ski area. British made, and largely Brit run, it's a destination we flock to year after year for a homely atmosphere in a good looking resort with more than enough pistes for a week (or three). It's made up of a huddle of gorgeous hamlets, built in traditional wood and stone and surrounded by thick woodland. The main area is Meribel Centre (usually known just as Meribel). A traditional alpine village with choc-box chale...
Meribel is one of the best ski resorts to learn in. There are three beginner areas known as 'Ski Facile' (easy ski) plus great green pistes to practise on including Le Foret and Altiport. Both runs are carefully planned out so you can practice at your own pace in quiet surroundings. If you're skiing with children, there are fantastic ski schools and child-orientated areas, including animal sculptures scattered around the trees at the 'Pistes des Animaux' where children can learn about local wildlife as they e...
Whether your day on the hill leaves you wanting to relax with a vin chaud, have a pint and play pool, or party the night away, your time off the slopes can be as varied as the day spent cruising the incredible Trois Vallees. It's said that you haven't experienced après ski here (or anywhere for that matter) until you've sampled toffee vodka in Le Rond Point, which is easily one of the most famous après ski bars in the world - complete with a slide down to the toilets! Meribel's rightly famous for its nightl...

"Friendly staff, great food, perfect for families"

Louise, London
5/ out of 5
The staff were really good, very friendly. The service is a cut above what we are used to. They pride themselves on taking good care of you, taking your bags up to your room, etc. It’s more of a family hotel, perfect for people with young children. They will look after your children all day if you want to go off and ski. The food was great, again it was better than your average chalet. It was definitely restaurant quality. We were really impressed. There was a reasonable amount of entertainment (without feeling like Butlins!), like quiz nights for example. They encouraged the guests to socialise without pushing you to join in. We just wanted to completely relax so we didn’t go out much in the evenings, we just propped up the hotel bar! The position is great, right on the slopes. It’s great for ski in / ski out. The hotel has a big terrace that opens out onto the piste. The slope it’s on is good for beginners too, it’s a nice shallow slope and it’s quite central to Mottaret. If you ski down to the wrong part of Mottaret it’s just a short chairlift back up to the piste by the hotel. It was the end of the season and there was quite a lot of mud around the outside of the ski/boot room. This is the only downside I can think of. If you wanted to go into town every evening it wouldn’t be ideal either as there were lots of steps to walk down (or you could take a mini gondola/lift thing). There were some restaurants nearby but Mottaret is quite a small place.

"Staff were out of this world, food was knock out, just needs a bit of a face lift"

Andrew Warnes, Altrincham

We were very happy with the chalet – the staff were sensational they couldn’t have done more! Dinner is a choice of a couple of starters, mains and desserts. I was very impressed with the wine which they served by the bottle – they didn’t scrimp or scrape either. It’s a little tired and could do with a lick of paint, but you’re on a ski holiday and the rooms were spacious enough. The location was great for skiing – you’re 10m from the nearest piste so you ski back there, take your skis off and walk the last bit. My daughter and son had only been skiing once before, this was their second week and they could certainly cope with skiing the blue down. If you know Mottaret, it’s quite a quiet village and the chalet is a little out, it would take about 10 minutes to walk there or there’s a little bubble car that runs until 10pm. There isn’t a lot to do in Mottaret though and on occasion we went to Meribel for some après ski and got the bus back, which I don’t remember being a problem. The only negative thing about the place was that they charged for WiFi and it wasn’t cheap, you had to pay per unit, not per family and we ended up paying 40 euros! I don’t feel they should be charging in this day and age, hopefully enough people have given feedback that it will change.
