Overview: hotel description: Hotel La Cachette, Arc 1600 description

Sitting at the base of the slopes in Arc 1600, Hotel La Cachette is all about convenience. It's ski-in, ski-out, with the lifts less than a minute away, and you're right in the centre of town too – so from being first on the mountain to exploring Arc 1600, it doesn't get easier than this. An old fave with a new look and new owners, this is a stylish pick with top-notch views of the French Alps.

There's an alpine feel inside the hotel, with exposed stone walls and stained wood beams everywhere. Take a closer look at the woodwork and you'll see pine trees and other shapes carved into it, tiny reminders that you're right in the heart of the mountains. In the afternoons, go straight from the slopes to the sun terrace to watch other skiers and boarders weave their way down the mountain, or find your zen with a trip to the spa. La Cachette's got saunas and hot tubs indoors and outside, so you can switch up the scenery as you please.

And mealtimes are a real treat. The restaurant's got a fab view of the slopes, and it's buffets all round. Load up your plate with whatever you want from the continental spread each morning, then enjoy traditional French dishes every evening - make sure to check out the raclette and the dessert bar.

Les Arcs came to be in 1968 after a group of ski instructors and architects dreamt up a resort with all the perks of a village but a mountainside location. It grew into one of the largest, most incredible ski areas in the Alps. The closest airport is Chambery with a transfer time of a couple of hours, plus transport links from Geneva, Lyon and Grenoble. Present-day Les Arcs consists of four main purpose built villages. The original resort, Arc 1600, was created for doorstep skiing and is linked by a funicular ...
As you'd expect from one of the biggest ski areas on the planet, there's everything from gorgeous tree-lined runs to wild, white-knuckle off-piste. For beginners, each of the 3 main Arcs has 'ski tranquille' zone, and the wide beginner runs leading to the resort have gentle gradients perfect for practising. Local instructors are on hand to show you the ropes, with ski schools based in each of the main villages (1800 has the most). There are magic carpet lifts at 1800 and 2000 - an easy way for newbies to get up ...
If you're looking for a party, Arc 1800 is the place to be. With heaps of watering holes like the Red Hot Saloon (or the 'Red Bar' to use local lingo), Benji's and La Folie Douce. If you're looking for more of a French-style après spot, Ambiente Cafe has a really cool atmosphere and lots of nice cocktails (happy hour usually starts at 4) while Le club 1950 your venue if you're looking to party into the wee hours. Arc 1600's a little quieter but for good music and a scenic terrace check out Les 2 Têtes. In te...

"Good food, close to the slopes, retro chalet vibe"

Colin, London
4/ out of 5
The hotel was really good. Really nice. The food was really good. The room was fine, the hotel is quite 1970s retro, it’s nice. It’s in a good location for skiing, you can ski more or less to the door. The hotel can be a bit like a large chalet, there is a nice bar and reception area to sit in. I didn’t get a chance to use the spa, I was too busy skiing. The hotel is in 1600 which is nice and quiet, there are a few bars but if you want to go out 1800 is better.

"Most convenient ever"

I don’t usually go back to the same place twice, but if I was returning to Les Arcs I’d have no qualms staying in the hotel again. It’s all quite 70’s style, not a top luxury 5 star hotel if you were looking for somewhere really top end but for what it does and the price you pay it’s excellent. The hotel is fine and the food was really good – the Christmas dinner they did was really nice and it was lucky they did it on Christmas Eve as one of the people I was skiing with had an accident the next day and would have missed it. Breakfast was a decent buffet with everything really and dinner alternated with a buffet one day and dinner served to your table the next . It was usually traditional French stuff and always included a salad buffet. To come to the slopes from the hotel was basically a five minute walk (in ski boots), for everything else you literally walk out the door and there are bars and restaurants right there. The main pub in the resort is right outside the hotel and is good for watching sport. We had a nice big room with a balcony facing the ski slopes and it had everything we needed. There’s a sauna downstairs which you could book for yourself and the gym was good enough. We liked the bar and the staff were very friendly. It would be a good place for families as there’s a really big crèche.
