Les Arcs came to be in 1968 after a group of ski instructors and architects dreamt up a resort with all the perks of a village but a mountainside location. It grew into one of the largest, most incredible ski areas in the Alps. The closest airport is Chambery with a transfer time of a couple of hours, plus transport links from Geneva, Lyon and Grenoble. Present-day Les Arcs consists of four main purpose built villages. The original resort, Arc 1600, was created for doorstep skiing and is linked by a funicular ...
As you'd expect from one of the biggest ski areas on the planet, there's everything from gorgeous tree-lined runs to wild, white-knuckle off-piste. For beginners, each of the 3 main Arcs has 'ski tranquille' zone, and the wide beginner runs leading to the resort have gentle gradients perfect for practising. Local instructors are on hand to show you the ropes, with ski schools based in each of the main villages (1800 has the most). There are magic carpet lifts at 1800 and 2000 - an easy way for newbies to get up ...
If you're looking for a party, Arc 1800 is the place to be. With heaps of watering holes like the Red Hot Saloon (or the 'Red Bar' to use local lingo), Benji's and La Folie Douce. If you're looking for more of a French-style après spot, Ambiente Cafe has a really cool atmosphere and lots of nice cocktails (happy hour usually starts at 4) while Le club 1950 your venue if you're looking to party into the wee hours. Arc 1600's a little quieter but for good music and a scenic terrace check out Les 2 Têtes. In te...

"We really enjoyed it!"

Keith
4/ out of 5
The hotel was really nice to be honest. We got moved to this hotel last minute as our originally booked hotel had some issue, but we were really glad that we got moved in the end! The area was more suitable for our little girl, who’s first time snowboarding it was. The lifts were more accessible here right by the hotel. The hotel was great, the staff were always busy looking after you, cleaning, giving you everything. I really can’t complain about anything, it was great, a really good holiday! The food itself was really good as well. The wide variety they were offering was great. You turn up one night and we were having beef bourguignon and then the next night you’d go in and there was loads of fish, so you never went hungry at all. The good thing with it being all-inclusive is that we could go back at dinner time and get full beef burgers and then paninis and all sorts…they really looked after us. For our little girl’s first time snowboarding, there were 3x gondola lifts. So it was like ski in/ski out, we just walked to the lifts and then went straight up. It was just so easy and practical for us in that sense, because we were right near the green slopes and it was very accessible. It was really great. 4

"big ski in / out hotel"

Alison Ward, Stockton on Tees
4/ out of 5
We had a good week and would stay in the Hotel du Golf again. The hotel had a few different restaurants, the buffet one was OK but the food they put out wasn’t brilliant - we were served cold leftover buffet food in our rooms on the first night when we arrived late, so I would recommend trying to get there earlier! There was also a French restaurant and Italian restaurant, which you had to book a table for but didn’t have to pay as it was all included in the holiday price. Every second day they had crepes and mulled wine waiting for you when you came off the ski slope, which was really nice. It’s actually a bit of a strange hotel as all the rooms and corridors are on a big slope, we couldn’t find our room at first as the room numbers and floors were quite confusing. The rooms themselves were also a bit odd – not as posh as I thought they’d be but quite practical, with lots of space for boots and stuff. Ours had a big step with a chair and a desk and a nice view out the window. There is a bar but it’s very expensive (£8 a pint!) but you can easily walk to another bar (near the shops etc) that had a happy hour. The fact you can ski in and out is brilliant, the lockers are all heated (although a little bit cramped when everyone’s putting their boots on at the same time). Once you’ve put your skis on, you’re straight out onto the chair lift. The hotel does have a pool... don’t do what we did and forget to pack swim stuff!

"Friendly place, great for slopes, disappointing pool"

Morvarid Ghaem-Maghami, Ealing
4/ out of 5
It’s a friendly place and has a lovely lobby with an open fire and they did live entertainment every night with groups singing. It has a perfect location; the hotel is so close to the slopes with the ski lift only a few minutes away and we kept our skis in the ski shop next door which is literally stuck to the side of the hotel. The food was very nice and I have no complaints there, they cooked all sorts and every night you had a different nationality – one night Italian, the next night something else. Even if you didn’t like one type of food there are different options as it’s a buffet, we really enjoyed it. The rooms were normal, I usually find that in French hotels, particularly ski resorts that the rooms tend not to be brilliant looking. The shower was hand held which was a real problem and although we tried to fix it onto the wall we didn’t manage and just had to put up with it. The only disappointment was that the swimming pool is like a little pond – not as big as it looks in the pictures. We were told this was a 4 star hotel but when we arrived it’s definitely a 3 star – you can’t miss the sign. When we got there, we found out that we had to book it beforehand to use. You’re only given three vouchers per family (like rations), when we complained our rep spoke to the hotel and got us some more vouchers, but it still wasn’t really enough for 12 of us for the week. Under 7s couldn’t use the pool which was also annoying. If we had gone not knowing there was a pool, it would have been a pleasant surprise, but because we picked the hotel specifically because of the pool it was a disappointment.
