The Engadin and the Davos/Klosters ski areas of the Graubünden region offer some of the best and most scenic skiing in Switzerland, with long seasons and well-groomed pistes. It’s easy to see why the classic resorts of Davos, Klosters and St. Moritz, which have been attracting British tourists for centuries, belong to the prestigious ‘Best of the Alps’ group.
Graubünden is home to some of the most beautiful landscape in the world, including the Swiss National Park, as well as two major ski areas: Davos/Klosters and the Engadin, which serves St. Moritz and its surrounds. They both encompass over 300km of varied piste. There is a long history of winter sports here – the first ski lift in the world opened on Bolgen in Davos in 1934, while the first ski school in Switzerland was founded in St. Moritz (and still runs today) - the town is also known as ‘the birthplace of winter tourism’.
All three of the major resorts are cosmopolitan, up-market and classy; Davos is home to international conferences such as World Economic Forum, Klosters has been attracting Hollywood stars and the Royal Family for years, and St. Moritz is full of exclusive clubs and fashionable boutiques. You don’t have to be on the cover of Forbes to visit these resorts though, there’s a wide range of accommodation and restaurants for all tastes and budgets, and the locals are known for their friendly nature, making everyone feel at home.
Klosters is the smallest of the three towns - more of a village really. Like the others, it still has its own train station with excellent rail links. It also has all the charm of a quintessential mountain resort with well-preserved traditional architecture and snow-lined pedestrian streets. Davos and St. Moritz are more flash with some excellent high-end shopping and all the amenities you could possibly want: cinemas, sports centres, casinos... Both sit on a lake, and St. Moritz in particular has stunning views over the frozen lake and mountains.
With their own ice rinks and toboggan runs, all resorts are excellent for family holidays, but Davos/Klosters has a slight edge over St. Moritz as it has been awarded the ‘Families Welcome’ seal by the Swiss Tourism Association.
Graubünden is the area to come to if you’d like to party in style and rub shoulders with the rich and famous. Look out for regulars Tara Palmer-Tomkinson and Prince Harry at Casa Antica club in Klosters. In St. Moritz you can dance the night away at King’s Club in the Bardutt Palace Hotel, where Sting amongst others has been spotted. Davos also attracts a lot of high-society thanks to its international events and conferences – maybe you’ll bump into Boris if you visit during this year’s UK Parliamentary Ski Races...
Although there are plenty of exclusive clubs, each resort has a wide variety of après-ski offerings, and everyone will find somewhere to suit their style and budget. For a cosy and welcoming atmosphere head to Klosters’ Gotschnabar, which has an open fireplace and cool Moroccan-themed décor. There are lots of family-friendly venues in Klosters too – if it’s nice weather, relax on the sunny terrace at Bär's Café and Bistro.
Over in Davos, Ex Bar attracts a mixed clientele and screens live sport, while family friendly La Carretta serves tasty Italian food. For a laidback evening in St. Moritz go to Bobby’s which has a pool table and serves English pub grub. Foodies will love the plethora of award winning gourmet restaurants in Graubünden – Ecco on Snow in St. Moritz was recently awarded two Michelin stars, while Hotel Walserhof in Klosters and Leonto Gourmet Restaurant in Davos serve regional delicacies.
Davos is home to Europe’s largest natural ice rink which regularly hosts International ice hockey tournaments. There are also 9 toboggan runs in the Davos/Klosters ski area, some of which are floodlit at night. All resorts have fantastic winter walking paths with stunning views of the surrounding Alps, and snow shoeing is popular in both areas. The Engadin area has an entire mountain, Muottas Muragl, dedicated to non-skiers with an igloo village (you can even stay overnight).
