Nestled between the larger villages of Auffach and Niederau in the western Tyrolean Alps, this quaint resort is in a prime location for skiing the entire Wildschonau Valley and vast Ski Juwel area. Much quieter and less well known than its larger Austrian counterparts, Oberau and the entire Wildschonau valley offer a peaceful atmosphere for a relaxing getaway to the piste and great value to match it. The town itself is very traditional and relaxed with a few bars and restaurants - the medieval architecture...
This small resort is a brilliant base if you’re looking to ski the Wildschonau valley or the Ski Juwel area. Whilst the majority of runs above the town are dedicated to learners, the more advanced have exciting intermediate runs just next door at Auffach. A number of drag lifts lead up from the main resort to the nursery slopes making this an ideal place for first time skiers. Happy ski school is the main school at the resort and gives an excellent introduction to the snow for learners. After gaining confide...
This small, laid-back town has a very relaxed après ski and most evening meals and drinks are spent at the hotels. With a very family-friendly scene, parents can wind down at the bar without leaving the premises. There are a number of options for eating out- Reini’s Essbar is highly regarded for its local dishes and Thalmuehle is a favourite for its delicious Tyrolean cuisine where you can spend your evening sharing stories over great food and flowing wine. You’re most likely to find a traditional Tyrolean...

"Can't recommend enough"

The Kellerwirt Hotel oozes Austrian charm and is perfectly located in the centre of Oberau. Its brilliant location meant that we were never too far from anything, with the beginner slopes right opposite the hotel, the Niederau cable car only 4km away and a ski bus stop right outside the hotel. All of Oberau’s bars and restaurants are very close by. The hotel was also very easy to get to, we flew into Innsbruck and it was only a 45 minute taxi ride to the hotel. The Kellerwirt is family run, owned by the Keller family for 10 generations. It had a lovely warm and friendly atmosphere, the host Hans and his sister Claudia couldn’t have been more welcoming, they treated everyone like extended family. It’s easy to see why so many guests return year after year just as we had. Breakfast was good with a choice of cereals, toast, cold meats and cheese’s but it was the evening meal that really was exceptional. We had 4 courses with 3 choices for the main meal; we had some beautiful stroganoffs, huge schnitzels that almost filled the whole plate and if the dessert didn’t take your fancy ice cream was always on offer. Our room was lovely and spacious with a terrace and a view of the mountains of Niederau. We went for New Year which was a great time to go, there was plenty of snow so skiing conditions were great and the weather was glorious, clear blue skies nearly every day. At about 9 o clock on New Year’s Eve we headed down to Oberau’s main slope right opposite the hotel and watched the torch lit procession put on by the ski instructors. They descended from the top of Oberau’s main slope with torches, to the background music of The Chariots of Fire theme song. Fireworks followed at midnight and we all came out of the hotel bar and stood on the terrace to watch. We had an absolutely fantastic holiday, I can’t recommend this hotel enough, the Keller family really do make sure you have a fabulous holiday.
