Ski Holidays in Fulpmes

One of the biggest villages in the stunning Stubai Valley, Fulpmes’ cute wood-clad buildings, ancient parish churches and never-ending sights of the Kalkkögel Mountains (likened to the Dolomites for their form) make the resort feel wonderfully isolated…

Actually it’s very well connected. While the village itself has its fair share of restaurants, bars, shops and accommodation, its proximity to one of Austria’s greatest cities means there’s always more to explore. Access to and from Innsbruck’s centre and airport is easy, with the drive / bus journey taking about half an hour. There’s also a slightly longer, more scenic route: if the weather’s good and you can spare an hour, Fulpmes is the last stop of the famous Stubaitalbahn tram, for an incredible journey passing dense forests, tiny hamlets and towering peaks, including some awesome sights over Innsbruck and the Europabrücke (one of the highest bridges in Europe).

In centuries past, the valley was mined for its rich source of iron ore, which led to Fulpmes being fondly known as ‘the village of the smithy’. This really put it on the map and the Fulpmes/Stubai name remains a seal of quality in the ironwork and toolmaking industries. Long-established blacksmiths still operate around here, but these days there’s a new attraction that (if you ask us) far surpasses mineral goodness…

From the edge of town, the Kreuzjochbahn gondola takes you straight up to the Schlick 2000 ski area, which isn’t huge, but it’s high: the National Alpine ski team often organize camps here because of the good snow conditions, which is a sign of quality if ever there was one. The skiing doesn’t stop here – with the Stubai Super Ski Pass, you’ve access to 3 more resorts, including the fabulously snow sure Stubai glacier (half an hour’s drive) and the slopes of Neustift and Mieders (both within a 10 minute drive).

What is Fulpmes like for Beginner skiers?

“Ron’s Kinderland” at the Froneben mid station is the perfect place for little ones to learn on, with the help of magic carpets, a training course and a diddy Snow Park. Beginners can conquer the basics on the “Schanzlin” and “Schlickerboden” nursery slopes before progressing onto the three blue “Panorama” runs, which start from the Kreuzjoch station. End the week with confidence-boosting long descent from the top at Sennjoch, starting off on the blue “Burgstal” run and linking onto the “Panorama”.

What is Fulpmes like for Intermediate skiers?

Intermediates will love the network of blues and reds from Sennjoch and Sennjochstuberl. Must-skis include the red “Galtalm” and the challenging marked route from Kreuzjoch. More advanced skiers can tackle the new “Kanonenrohr” black which links onto the “Zibenschuss”. Both within a ten-minute drive, the Serlesbahen at Mieders and Elfer ski area at Neustift only have a handful of runs each, but they’re well worth a stop-off for a change of scenery on some blues and reds.

What is Fulpmes like for Advanced skiers?

While experts looking to clock up miles might find that the local slopes become a little repetitive, the brilliant thing about this area is that on top of the Schlick, three other resorts are included in the Stubai Super Ski Pass. Many choose to hire a car to make around easy, and a ski bus also goes between them. For a step up in altitude, the Stubai Glacier takes about half an hour to get to. Its 34 pistes include the notoriously difficult black “Daunhill”.

What is Fulpmes like for snowboarding?

There is the awesome Stubai Zoo Snowpark at the Stubai Glacier.

What is Fulpmes like for off-piste skiing?

Near the Stubai Glacier you find some deliciously deep powder runs.

Fulpmes Restaurants

Fulpmes Après Ski

In the village, Leo’s Stadlbar is famous for the fact that you can buy beer by the meter (11 beers on a 1m long wooden support…) as well as its live music shows and DJ nights. Erwin and Isabella extend a warm welcome at Bar Caramba, with live music on Friday’s and a brilliantly cheesy playlist for the rest of the week.

Refuel at Bel Ami for a good old plate of pizza or head to Gasthof Grobenhof for a traditional Austrian dining experience - their portions are huge! For some night time partying, your best bet’s the Rumpl disco over in Neustfit (it’s under ten minutes in a taxi or the bus back to Fulpmes usually runs until 2am).

Fulpmes Activites for Non-skiers

Traditional wintertime activities include toboggan rides on Sonnenstein and Schlick (the latter’s often open in the evenings for a bit of floodlit fun) and ice skating in the centre of the village.

The super thing about holidays here is the ease of access to Tyrol’s capital – Innsbruck is a beautiful, fascinating city and the half hour trip is well worth taking, whether for a big night out, non-ski day trip or just a spot of shopping. If you’ve been skiing on the glacier, stop for a spot of après at the legendary Dresdner Hutte or visit the Ice Cave or viewing platform for something completely different

Clothing Food & Souvenir Shops

The variety of goods sold in the dozen or so shops in Fulpmes ranges from sport and mountain gear through crafts and latest fashion "Tyrolean Style" to ecologically raised products of local farmers. There are four bakeres, two florists, fashion and book stores. Nearly all winter sport equipment can be rented in local sport shops.

It's also very easy to get to Innsbruck by train or bus in only a quarter of an hour so a shopping trip to the big city is quite feasible.

Best Time to Visit Fulpmes

90 snow cannons, which operate on 75% of the slopes, are always ready to step in if Mother Nature takes a break during the season. Snowmaking begins in the middle of November on the Schlick, and as early as September on the glacier to provide a decent cover come the beginning of the season.

In Schlick 2000, most of the area is north or north west facing, which means the slopes are shaded from the sunshine. The reds and blues from Sennjochstuberl and Sennjoch at 2225m and 2240m usually stay in decent shape the longest, even if the lower slopes are suffering towards the end of the season.

If the nearby resorts don’t have enough cover, Austria’s biggest glacier ski area is just half an hour away. It’s open for snowsure skiing from October to June, which provides peace of mind if you’re planning an early or late season holiday.

What's Fulpmes like at Christmas?

If you like a bit of old school Austrian tradition, you’ll love Christmas in Fulpmes – look out for markets in the nearby hamlets or pop over to the legendary Christmas market in Innsbruck.

What's Fulpmes like in the New Year?

Have a very happy New Year in Fulpmes, exploring the Stubai Valley’s ski resorts and enjoying festivities and fireworks.

What's Fulpmes like in Half-Term?

Tip top skiing conditions and the amazing Ron’s Kinderland make February Half Term in Fulpmes a great choice for young beginners, while more advanced skiers set off and explore the lift and bus linked area.

What's Fulpmes like at Easter?

Spring sunshine over the Kalkkögel Mountains is something that has to be seen, and spending Easter in Fulpmes is a super opportunity to do so. With slopes above 2000m and the nearby glacier, the skiing shouldn’t be bad either.
