Up on a plateau at 1750m and surrounded by 2000m+ peaks, La Toussuire’s not the biggest name in French skiing, but it’s spot on if you’re looking for a cheap ski holiday that doesn’t scrimp on terrain. Self-catered apartments and 3* hotels make up most of the accommodation – lots housed in chalet style buildings, with high rise Le Corbusier style apartment blocks dotted about (convenience wins over traditional character in this neck of the woods).

55km of local slopes are shared with the smaller resort of Les Bottières, which sits at 1300m and connects up with LT via a red piste and the Lauze and Marmottes drag lifts. This forms a fraction of massive Les Sybelles – the biggest ski area in the Maurienne Valley and fourth biggest in France, shared between La Toussuire, Les Bottières, Le Corbier, Saint Colomban des Villards and Saint Jean and Saint Sorlin d’Arves. At 310km it’s bigger than the Val d’Isere-Tignes ski area, but last time we checked the pass was a good €50 cheaper…

Chambéry is the closest airport at under an hour and a half’s drive away and you can reach the resort from Grenoble, Lyon and Geneva in about two hours. Rail travellers should use the Saint Jean de Maurienne station which is about a 20-minute drive away.

What is La Toussuire like for Beginner skiers?

The Front de neige area is beginner territory, with a gaggle of short green and blue runs served by drag lifts. In the blue department, Marmotte is a lovely long, winding descent from Tete de Bellard to La Toussuire that shows off the sheer beauty of the surroundings. The Soleil chair on the other side of the village leads to the Lac and Soleil runs for more scenic skiing in the local area.

What is La Toussuire like for Intermediate skiers?

If you can ski blues comfortably, it’s well worth upgrading to the area pass. Longe Comb’s one of our favourites - a cruisey, top-of-the-world run – and the Panoramique into St Sorlin does exactly what it says on the tin. Intermediates can roam far and wide, but closer to home, the Gran Truc chair serves a trio of runs leading down to Bottiers or back to resort. Over at L’Ouillon, take blue Bellard then red Col de Bellard, which joins blue Liason Techette and Bouyans for a route down between the trees into St Colomban, a 6.8km run!

What is La Toussuire like for Advanced skiers?

Black pistes might be in short supply (there’s only one locally, the Perron, and a total of nine throughout the area) and for experts it’s more about clocking up the mileage than tearing down steeps.

What is La Toussuire like for snowboarding?

For freestylers, the Sybelles snowpark is over in St Sorlin d’Arves at the bottom of Ouillon, with intermediate and expert level tables, rails and boxes.

What is La Toussuire like for off-piste skiing?

Off-piste, the Bear Couloirs are worth hiring a guide for as well as the couloirs leading into Toussuire (a short traverse from the lifts). The Grand Truc peak is great for carving up a storm.

What is La Toussuire like for cross country skiing?

You can find around 23km of trails between La Toussuire and Le Corbier.

La Toussuire Restaurants

Tonneau’s a great restaurant for some wondeful fondue, pizzas or crepes.Grizzly gets packed out pretty fast, and you’ll soon see why when you try the regional dishes here... For a speedy snack, head to Ski K Faim for a sandwich or crepe.

La Toussuire Après Ski

If you’d pick dinner and drinks over pitchers and parties any day, the après ski here’s more suited for you – no dancing on table tops or champagne showers here. Le Tonneau’s a good people pleaser, where you can sit and drink beer and wine, watch live sport.

La Toussuire Activites for Non-skiers

The resort’s childhood centre has a day care and kids club for tiddlers aged 6 months through to youths of 12. If your youngsters are ready to take to the slopes, they’ll love the Lutins fun zone for beginners which has magic carpet lifts, easy pistes and a sledding run. When the skis have been put away for the day, treat them to a snowmobiling session on the kids track (6-13 year olds) or set off on a proper tour with teens.

If your group is more ski focussed than après ski focussed, La T could be spot on. You’ve got one of France’s biggest ski areas on your doorstep, and while there aren’t a dozen party bars to choose between each evening, nice spots like Le Tonneau should have all you need (good drinks menu, local cuisine, cracking pizzas, big screens for sports…). While beginners stick to the local slopes, more experienced skiers and snowboarders can explore the whole Sybelles area, cruising long, scenic slopes and stopping for photos and picnics along the way.
