Iso Syöte is Finland’s southernmost fell and with the Syotekeskus and Iso Syote Fell ski areas joined in recent years, you can enjoy around 20km of highly acclaimed skiing.

Iso Syote is Finland’s southernmost Fell at about 150km south of the Arctic Circle. In terms of getting here, Kuusamo is the nearest airport at 100km away, which is about a one hour transfer to the resort. The next nearest airports are Oulu (140km) and Rovaniemi (160km). If you are travelling by rail, the nearest train station is Oulu which has a bus connection to the resort.

Day trips to Rovaniemi are possible if you want to visit Lapland’s capital – visit Santa’s village and even meet him, the elves and his reindeer. You can also visit the Arctic Zoo where you’ll meet polar bears, wolves and deer.

There is the SnowWorld daycare centre for children near the main slopes, where little ones can learn to ski and meet live reindeer under the care of professional nannies. Hippula is another indoor childcare centre.

What is Iso-Syote like for Beginner skiers?

SnowLand consists of 2 family trails with free lift access, served by a magic carpet, button lift and rope tow. The trails are lovely and wide for those setting out on their skiing career. You can sledge here and play in the playground and snow castle... and there’s usually a BBQ for hungry tummies. There are also 2 lovely long, wide runs for beginners.

The mountain has 33% intermediate slopes , the more challenging slopes are on the back area.

We love the pizzas at Pärjänkievari (the steaks are super too). Club Legenda has something for adults and kids in the evenings with past seasons seeing events like candy bingo.

Panorama The Panorama restaurant of Hotel Iso Syöte is known for high quality dining. While enjoying your meal, you can admire the breath-taking view from the hilltop to all directions over the surrounding snow covered forests and valleys. A large choice of food available is in the breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets, or you can try local delicacies from the à la carte menu, for lunch or dinner. To complete your meal, there is a wide range of rich and tasteful wines to choose from.

Ski Restaurant Romekievari Hotel Iso-Syote’s Romekievari has a lovely selection of after ski drinks, snacks and light meals for you to get stuck into! We love their fondue nights, where you can have your pick of cheese or reindeer meat with all the traditional trimmings. Afterwards, you can curl up with coffee and cocoa in front of the restaurant’s cosy fireplace.

Iso-Syote Après Ski

The Panorama restaurant in Hotel Iso Syote is one of the most popular eateries in the resort, with high quality dishes accompanied by amazing views of the surroundings. It’s attached to the Panorama Bar where you can enjoy live music and a disco that stays open into the early hours. The Snapsibaari shot bar has a DJ and regular theme and karaoke nights and is open Fridays and Saturdays in the winter season.

Iso-Syote Activites for Non-skiers

Snowmobile safaris depart from most hotels and offer a breathtaking ride through the pine forests. You can also take a husky or reindeer sleigh ride through the surroundings.

Arktikum About 2 hours from Iso-Syote is Rovaniemi, where you’ll find the fantastic Arktikum. The attraction consists of a museum where you can view exhibits on Lapland’s natural and cultural history. There’s also an arctic science centre here where you can learn all about climate change and the geology of this fascinating part of the world.

Metsäkyly Forest Retreat • 165km from Iso-Syote, Metsäkyly sits on the shore of Lake Sieri. Here you can indulge in a wellness program consisting of Finnish sauna, beauty treatments and a splash in the ice pool! Relaxing in the Jacuzzi a hit with most too, while many also come to try the lovely meals and wander through the surrounding forest.

Santa Park Visitors to Iso-Syote can reach the Santa Park at Rovaniemi in about 2.5 hours. The attraction has a brilliant kitchen where you can cook up a winning batch of gingerbread, an Elf School and a fantastic ice gallery. There’s also a sleigh ride, giant snow globe and the world’s only underground Arctic Circle crossing. Be sure to meet Santa here too and have a play in the Angry Birds park!

Joulukka 2.5 hours’ drive from Iso-Syote is Lapland’s capital, Rovaniemi – Joulukka will pick you up here before transporting you out into the surrounding wilderness. You’ll arrive at Santa’s woodland grotto, where you have the choice of some fantastically festive programs. Particular favourite activities include training to be Santa’s helper, making Christmas decorations and meeting Santa Claus himself.

Best Time to Visit Iso-Syote

The direction which the various Iso-Syote slopes face can make or break your ski holiday. To guarantee good snow conditions, choose a resort with piste which face the right way for the time of year you're travelling.

In the coldest winter months of January and February pick a resort with sunny south facing slopes, so your days on the snow doesn't feel like a polar expedition. Conversely, in the warmest spring skiing months of March and especially April, a resort with cool and shady north facing trails will ensure you're not riding on slush, but benefitting from best late season snow. The best destinations have areas which face in all directions so that you're guaranteed terrific conditions whatever the weather.
