Like the rest of the year, Christmas in the Italian resorts is all about enjoying some of the best food on earth and soaking up la dolce vita, with fairy lights and the occasional market adding to the festive atmosphere. The slopes are famously less crowded (everyone’s too busy enjoying a mountain-side bombardino), prices tend to be lower and the presence of a white Christmas... well that goes without saying.
Best Italian ski resorts at Christmas for:
Chalets give a more intimate feel to your Christmas and become a real home from home - whether you’re staying just with your group or family in one of our smaller properties, or sharing with others in a larger one, you can really get to know the place and its staff. Christmas dinner with all the trimmings is dished up in most chalets on the big day and in some properties you might even get a visit from Father Christmas himself! Pick a chalet with a fireplace which will serve as a welcome warmer after a day on the mountains – we also have superior properties with their own hot tub or sauna (or both) if you like the sound of some serious relaxation. Some properties are tailored specifically to families and offer day care and activities making them perfect if your bambini are too young to ski.
If you’re travelling with children, check out Selva’s Chalet Silvia which is one of our favourite family chalets. Large groups might want to consider our chalet hotels like the Cristallo in Courmayeur which offer chalet comforts combined with the size (and usually facilities) of a hotel. For quality of snow, Cervinia, where you’ll find Chalet Hotel Dragon is one of Italy’s best resorts. If you want to ski in style, book in to one of our superior chalets and soak up la dolce vita - Club Med's chalets in Pragelato are fantastic for a first class stay in the mountains. Those more concerned with access to the slopes should pick somewhere like Selva’s Chalet Soldanella, where you can pretty much ski right back to the door.
Whether you’re sticking to the Christmas budget with one of our hotel deals or using the festive week as an excuse for some 4 or 5 star luxury, a stay in one of our ski hotels can prove an excellent choice. Enjoy Italy’s famous cuisine at base in our half board and full board options – your meals are included in the holiday price which makes budgeting simple. Alternatively, head off into town to sample the local eateries with B&B – if you’re booking a table for the day itself make sure you do so in advance! You won’t have to worry about cooking the big dinner - most properties put on a special banquet. Spend Christmas evening in the hot tub in our hotels with wellness facilities or pick a hotel with its own bar if you fancy a fireside tipple with friends or family.
It doesn’t get much better than Grand Hotel Miramonti Majestic in chic Cortina if you’re looking for an upmarket stay in the mountains. In Pragelato Via Lattea, Club Med is a fantastic place for families with child-orientated services and facilities while groups might prefer striking La Torre in Italy’s après central Sauze d’Oulx. If it’s quality of powder you’re looking for, you’ll enjoy some of the nation’s best snow in Livigno, where you’ll find Hotel Touring, a great property in the town centre. With terrific access to more quality snow in Passo Tonale, ski in / ski out Grand Hotel Paradiso in is another of our favourites for couples, families and groups who will love its hard-to-beat location near the slopes, lift, ski school and town centre.
Do Christmas your way with the flexible nature of self-catering holidays. The great thing about having an apartment is that it’s yours – with the place to yourselves you can celebrate Christmas exactly the way you want to. Without set mealtimes or menus, you can really tailor the dining plans to suit you, buying ingredients locally and cooking easy favourites or eating out in local restaurants. To top it off, you’re saving money too; self-catering holidays usually come up cheaper than others so if you don’t mind taking on the task of Christmas dinner, you’re likely to have some money left over for a few more stocking fillers. At the end of the day, the quality of skiing won’t be any different than if you were booked into a 5 star hotel.
Groups looking to party will find the Max Bar Apartments in Sauze dʼOulx hard to beat – if you want Italy’s liveliest après, Sauze is the place to ski and these apartments are right in the middle of town, with Paddyʼs Bar opposite and more après including Mira Funky only moments away. If you’re a family who would rather stay in a quieter location, the Apartments Checrouit in Courmayeur are great – they’re near the ski lift too so you won’t have to wander too far. For the best snow this early in the season, stay in one of the higher resorts like snow sure Livigno, where you’ll find La Pineta Apartments. Get straight out onto the slopes on Christmas morning in Bardonnecia’s Apartments Rive Campo Smith or Cervinia’s Planibel Apartments.
