Espace Killy ski area Fantastic après ski High altitude skiing

Tignes is somewhere you can ski longer, higher and further than most other resorts in the Alps. Owing its snow-reliability to the Grande Motte glacier, the local ski area is joined with Val d’Isere’s to form the mammoth Espace Killy - intermediates will have a whale of a time here. Choose between 5 different villages, whether your priority is convenience, cosiness or cheap accommodation. Tignes also has one of the most famous New Year parties in the Alps.

Tignes ski resort (pronounce it 'Teens') is one half of the stunning Espace Killy, one of the biggest linked ski areas in France. Because of its high-altitude terrain and access to the Grande Motte glacier, the resort is open both earlier and later in the season than many others and often the lifts are running for short periods of summer skiing. Predominantly purpose built, the resort itself is divided into 5 villages, each different in its own way but all well linked by lifts and bus services. The main area...
With varied pistes at a high altitude, the ski area has impressive powdered terrain for skiers and boarders alike. Beginners can practice on the nursery slopes at Le Lac and Le Lavachet, where you'll find gentle, quiet runs that are accessible via free beginners' lifts. Le Bollin at Val Claret is another conveniently situated green and Grattalu is a lovely wide blue for those wanting to build confidence. Tignes is incredible if you ski at an intermediate level, with miles of powdery blue and red runs includi...
While it's said that those who appreciate Tignes do so for the serious skiing over the après ski, this doesn't do justice to the fact that Tignes' 60+ bars/pubs and 4 night clubs provide some of the best nightlife in the Alps. All villages have their fair share of places to eat and drink, and with a shuttle bus service running 24 hours, you can enjoy your evening without worrying about the journey back. Jam bar is small but with a great atmosphere and Loop bar pretty much offers it all: with live sport, world c...

"Wonderful staff, shabby hotel, great value"

Miranda Dunn, Hammersmith
3/ out of 5
Pros: - the staff were wonderful and couldn't do enough for us - the other guests were also a delight to be with - can ski home if not a beginner (our youngest was 4) - really excellent value for the four of us - I really liked the food (husband Tom not so much) Cons: - the hotel and rooms were very tired, verging on shabby (although I do think we all have far too high standards these days) - not ideal with very young children as no childcare - bus ride with kids heading out in morning - lots of steps. Overall it was terrific value but we probably won't go back as our 3 year old will ski this year so we'd prefer to be more central. I would recommend for families as long as children were 4+ and not beginners. We love Tignes for our family ski holidays and keep going back!

"Ski back, lovely hosts, worn out chalet"

This host tends to get feedback about how friendly the staff are and that seems the most common reason that they get re-booked so often. The hearty food is mentioned often, so perhaps that factors into the decision to return. Its definitely not the quality of the accommodation which has been described as a bit worn out. Good value is also mentioned a lot, and perhaps this catered chalet hotel is able to be reasonably priced (despite being a ski back to door property) because they don't spend your money on refurbishing the accommodation? Overall we love the fact that you can ski back (not beginners) and that the hosts make it a friendly and happy place to stay. This may not be the place for you if you're looking for a higher standard of (or even an up to date) décor, but clients report convivial vibes by the bucket load, and the food is good and hearty too. We're giving it 4 snowflakes out of 5 because there's no way to input 3.5 and the lovely hosts make it worth more than a 3. A good really value, no-frills base, for a week skiing the incomparable Espace Killy!
