This was our first time skiing, it was an experience! The hotel was alright. The food was lovely, a mixture of different dishes that you could tell were homemade and were well presented. Our bedroom was fine, slightly on the small side but we just wanted somewhere to rest our heads at the end of the day. The lo... + more

The location is great, rooms are small but clean. However the food completely let this place down. The food whilst we were there was atrocious; tiny portions of flavour less food with dessert two of the nights being a piece of fruit! This is a small, chalet-style gem of a hotel on the outskirts of Sauze d'Oulx. Its location could not be better for keen skiers and snowboarders as the Jouvenceaux Sportinia lift is just 50m away, so you can ski or board to it straight from the boot room! And for those that are comfortable on red runs, it's possible to ski back to the hotel too.

There's a lovely, typically Italian laid-back atmosphere thanks to the intimate bar and snug lounge with its open fire. The dining area is also rustically styled with original stone walls and wooden ceilings. Plenty of wooden furnishings creates an authentic mountain feel too. And being on the outskirts of Sauze means that the views across the valley are spectacular, particularly from the large sun terrace.

Sauze's legendary nightlife is about 1km up the hill and ski buses run every 30 minutes or so from a stop a couple of minutes' walk away. There's also a hotel shuttle bus that we run regularly to the resort centre between 5 & 10pm every day. Alternatively, the small village of Jouvenceaux has a couple of restaurants and bars that are only a few minutes away.

To help you relax at the end of the day, there's a small wellness area with a hot tub, sauna and small treatment room offering sports and relaxing massages. The Edelweiss really does tick all of the boxes for a great little ski hotel. We'll see you there soon!

Equipment delivery service

When you pre-book equipment hire with us, you can also enjoy our hassle-free delivery service. Simply head to the equipment hire shop on arrival day (about a 10-15min walk), get fitted for your hire kit and the shop will deliver it to the hotel later that day. On the last day of your holiday, simply head back to the shop and drop the kit off.

The 24 bedrooms are spacious and a nice mix of traditional and contemporary in style. Many have hand carved furniture and balconies with fantastic views of the piste and surrounding mountains. You'll find all the usual facilities too; cable TV, mini-safe, telephone and an en-suite bathroom with hairdryer, shower & wc.

Meals: Chalet Hotel Edelweiss food & drink

Our chalet board basis is designed for skiers and boarders. Breakfast is a fairly extensive affair with cooked and continental options every day. Your daily afternoon tea of freshly baked cakes and biscuits will be waiting for you when you come in from the slopes.

Evening meals are a three-course set-menu with regionally inspired dishes and served with complimentary wine, all followed by fresh coffee.

We provide evening meals on six nights a week leaving you free to head out and explore the resort on one evening. For shorter holidays over New Year 2017/18, you still have one night free to explore the resort and local cuisine.

"2nd review of Edelweiss - 2015/16 season"

They also have more salads which we like, some people (including myself) like to have greens and we were really happy with the amount and quality available. Beforehand we thought it was becoming more boutique-y, with Italians coming and going for a few days at a time. Now it’s basically British with guests booking full weeks, which has changed the atmosphere - a slight downside. We’ve been lucky in the past when it came to the weather, but the conditions weren’t good this time around. There wasn’t much snow in Europe at the time, and the area was running on artificial snow. They just had one big 4km slope open. They did bus us round to other resorts, and we still managed to ski every day, so it didn’t spoil our holiday.

Our bedroom was fine, slightly on the small side but we just wanted somewhere to rest our heads at the end of the day. The lounge area wasn’t big enough for the number of rooms the hotel had, so there wasn’t seating for all guests there (but there was plenty of space in the dining room). We went towards the end of the season so we couldn’t ski to the lift that was quite close to the hotel, which made it difficult! On the first couple of days we walked without skis, then the shuttle took us. My advice would be that this isn’t a holiday for beginners in any way, shape or form. When you take the ski lift that takes you to the top, you physically have to ski down to the ski school. More advanced skiers would be fine, but not beginners!

We went as a family and it was absolutely brilliant for us. We had a very positive experience, that’s why we came back to Sauze again. The family that run the hotel are very friendly. One of the best things about the hotel is the closeness to the piste. It’s about 50 meters from the hotel, you can ski down to the lifts from there. The location is quiet, it’s in a hamlet away from the main town but it’s not far from the centre. The food at the hotel, for that level of holiday, is very good. The children liked it too. It’s Italian family food really, lots of pasta, that sort of thing. The hotel is very good value; what you get for what you pay for is excellent.
