Ski Holidays in Silver Star Mountain

If Pixar did ski resorts, we’re sure they’d look like this one. The brightly coloured Toy Town of a base station is an immediate hit with little rippers, who have first class schooling to nurse them through their first turns by day, and everything from a candy shop to mini snow mobiles for afters. Grown-ups will love the convenience of a compact, traffic-free, ski-in, ski-out village, with a good enough mix of terrain to fill a terrific week together.

Each new building in Silver competes to be bigger and bolder than those that came before, resulting in a striking place, a bit like an acrylic paint box. And nestled in the pines of the Okanagan Valley, it could well be the setting for a fairy-tale, or a Western... An odd mix perhaps, but it doesn’t take much to see why families love it so - it’s also compact, car-free and, better still, almost entirely ski-in/ski-out.

But Silver Star isn’t all style and no substance. Innovations like the My1Pass let you access many of the resorts’ activities along with its lifts, meaning lots of affordable family-fun. With four distinct mountain faces, a considerable 3282 acres and 132 runs, the progressive terrain here is also pitch-perfect for learning.

It’s the special touches that really make a trip away and knowing this full well, Silver offers specials like night skiing, movie nights and “nights out” for your young ones and their new ski friends through the day-care centre.

The village only has a handful of restaurants, shops and the odd pub, but this mountain’s quiet nightlife is all part of its charm.

What's the ski area like in Silver Star Mountain?

Silver Star may be super family-friendly, but don’t go thinking this is a dinky little ski hill with only a few runs for the kids. With 3282 acres and 132 marked runs, there’s plenty to keep all entertained and a variety of terrain. Voted as having some of the best groomed runs in the country, the skiing spans four mountain faces, in four distinct areas: Vance Creek, Attridge, Silver Woods and Putnam Creek.

At 15% of the ski area, there’s enough of Silver’s beginner turf to inspire confidence and fill up the ski day. Start off in The Zone and move onto confidence building greens like Easy Street, or to the Silver Queen chair, super convenient for lunch back at home if your accommodation’s around here. This and the Summit Chair are often opened for night skiing at the weekend.

For intermediates, a smooth progression is possible and involves trips to all parts of the mountain, so some serious coverage. Start at Vance Creek for easy blues served by the Comet six-pack. From there, ski down to the Silver Woods high-speed quad, for rolling runs that families can ski side-by-side. Then high tail it to the Attridge area, which has a mix of easy runs and short, steep blacks served by its own chair. This also links to the Putnam Creek sector on the back side, which has lots of steep blacks and easier blues.

There’s some exceptional expert terrain at Silver, with almost the entirety of Putnam Creek on the backside reserved for the advanced. Several double black diamond runs - many of them mogul fields - will pump up the adrenaline and for a real adventure, heli-skiing is available from the base to over 270,000 skiable acres.

Another surprising asset – with 93-plus miles of cross-country trails here, Silver has the largest daily groomed XC trail network in all of Canada and is used by both the Canadian and US XC ski teams.

Best Time to Visit Silver Star Mountain

The location of Silver Star Mountain is spot on for great snow. Receiving an average 275 inches (7m) a season, snowmaking equipment would be throwing money away. January and February are the most reliable months, but there can be great spring skiing with the occasional fresh dump in late March and early April.

Another great thing about Silver - the temperatures tend to be just right. Cold enough to keep snow pristine, yet mild enough that you don’t freeze over. On days the weather takes an unusual turn for the worse, the ski area is largely below the treeline and protected from the elements anyway.

It’s no surprise that Silver star has won “Best Family Resort” more times than it can count. The tiny, traffic-free village is easy to get around and yet somehow crammed with afterhours activities. With offerings like mini snowmobiles, Tube Town’s tubing park and a huge natural ice rink, sprogs won’t even spare a thought for the iPad. Better yet, many of these activities are free with the lift pass.

Thanks to full and half-day childcare with the StarKids Daycare centre (for kids aged 18 months to 5), parents can get out and explore this sizeable resort together and tuck into its advanced terrain. While for little skiers, lessons with the Snowsports School is consistently highly rated for ages 4-12. This even offers after school activities and several Kids Night Out’s where they can frolic with friends from ski school, while the grown-ups do dinner.

Let them show off their new skills with night skiing around the Summit and Silver Queen Chairs and "The Zone" Magic Wonder Carpet on weekends.

Whether your group includes a bunch of seasoned skiers, children or cross country enthusiasts, this place has something to suit – often moments from your accommodation. The ski in, ski out nature of the mountain village makes group meet-ups easy, with evening events ranging from meals out to pub drinks and snowmobile tours.
