Ski Holidays in Revelstoke

When Revelstoke opened its doors in 2007, it was the biggest North American ski resort debut for twenty years. With the combined efforts of Revy’s lift, cat, heli and backcountry skiing, it accesses a ridiculous 515,000 acres of terrain, and is the only resort on the planet to offer heli and cat skiing from a single village base.

Revelstoke Mountain Resort is somewhat unique in the skiing world. Founded in 2007, it doesn’t have a deep history like resorts in Austria and Switzerland, but there’s a lot to be said for the modern approach. “RMR” has consistently set out to break records – and is doing a spectacular job of it. At present, it’s home to the longest vertical in North America (1713 m of lift-accessed terrain) and 3121 acres of fall-line skiing, which include some glorious glades and phenomenal groomers. To keep the superlatives coming – its founder chose a perfect position, an area among the Selkirk mountains that averages about 500 inches of snow a year. Best yet? The crowds have yet to cotton on to its potential.

For a powder hound, this up-and-comer couldn’t be better. If you’ve yet to try cat or heli skiing, this is the place to do it, with extensive opportunities in the endless powder of the Selkirks. Come in numbers, and it’s affordable too. Selkirk Tangiers, for example, offers day heli trips which, shared between 10 (the capacity of its choppers), can average out at the same cost as a day’s lift pass.

While the facilities in resort leave something to be desired, you’ll be happy not to have too much choice after a long day on these massive hills. If cabin fever does kick in, the railway town of Revelstoke BC is just a 6km bus ride away, with plenty of shops, restaurants and bars and a homely Canadian frontier vibe.

In constant development, the master plan for RMR has yet to be fully realised – with a new run, lift or shop opening more seasons than not and plans for the construction of a huge hotel and shopping complex any day now.

What's the ski area like in Revelstoke?

RMR has 3121 acres of skiable terrain but only 60 trails, which gives an idea of the extent of the off-piste opportunities. This is advanced skier country, best for those with several seasons of experience under their belts. With the longest vertical in North America (at 1713 metres – topping Whistler by 104 metres) the thighs feel the burn here after just a few runs.

Nonetheless, Revy has been upping its efforts to accommodate beginners in recent years. The Turtle Creek area in front of the Sutton Place Hotel has a magic carpet and learner’s slope, while the lower mountain runs from Revelation Lodge are great for progression. In its lower reaches, the resort’s longest run, the 15km Last Spike, is also a wide and gentle drop back to the resort.

For those hankering for more of a challenge, head to the top of the Revelation Gondola. From here you can head down the upper reaches of the Last Spike to a selection of different runs. The top pitches of Snow Rodeo and Wooley Bully are super wide and include rollers to work on your speed control and turns. If ever they become too steep, there’s always the option of cutting back to the friendlier Last Spike green.

Strong skiers are the most at home in Revy, with heli skiing opportunities from two different operators to expand your horizons. For lift-accessed fun, drop into the North Bowl from Sub-Peak for razor sharp descents such as Greely Bowl and Sweet Spot. For a powder playground head to the glades of Mt Mackenzie, where the freshies can stay hidden for days.

Best Time to Visit Revelstoke

Revy is well-known for getting lots of snow - some of the heli skiing areas amass a whopping 12-18 metres of the stuff a season, and the resort’s not far behind with about 9-14 metres.

There’s likely to be good coverage at Revy any time you visit, but the month can make a difference to a heliski trip. Earlier in the season, December to early February, sees lots of tree-line skiing as winter storms bring deep powder conditions. But as spring approaches in late Feb and March, longer days and shallower powder usually sees trips to the Selkirk’s alpine bowls and glaciers.

This place has been working overtime in recent years to draw more families and first-timers to its powder playground. The Turtle Creek area in front of the Sutton Place Hotel with magic carpet, learner’s slope, and tubing hill is just the start of its efforts.

This family friendly evolution has also manifested in the addition of a child care centre on the mountain and a good ski school program – with a school (the Revelstoke Outdoors Centre) based just 50 steps from the Turtle Creek Beginner Area.

Best yet, kids’ lift tickets are typically inexpensive here and beginners’ packages amongst the cheapest in Canada.

For a group of snow aficionados, Revy has the makings of the ski trip of a lifetime. With choppers that can accommodate up to 10, a heli day trip with Selkirk Tangiers can work out the same price as a day’s lift-pass. Meanwhile, three powdery bowls are set aside for cat-skiing – ticking off another potential “first” for group members – all in a week’s work.

Previous years have seen special discounts on lift tickets, equipment rentals, group lessons, and accommodation for larger groups.
