When Revelstoke opened its doors in 2007, it was the biggest North American ski resort debut for twenty years. With the combined efforts of Revy’s lift, cat, heli and backcountry skiing, it accesses a ridiculous 515,000 acres of terrain, and is the only resort on the planet to offer heli and cat skiing from a single village base.
Revelstoke Mountain Resort is somewhat unique in the skiing world. Founded in 2007, it doesn’t have a deep history like resorts in Austria and Switzerland, but there’s a lot to be said for the modern approach. “RMR” has consistently set out to break records – and is doing a spectacular job of it. At present, it’s home to the longest vertical in North America (1713 m of lift-accessed terrain) and 3121 acres of fall-line skiing, which include some glorious glades and phenomenal groomers. To keep the superlatives coming – its founder chose a perfect position, an area among the Selkirk mountains that averages about 500 inches of snow a year. Best yet? The crowds have yet to cotton on to its potential.
For a powder hound, this up-and-comer couldn’t be better. If you’ve yet to try cat or heli skiing, this is the place to do it, with extensive opportunities in the endless powder of the Selkirks. Come in numbers, and it’s affordable too. Selkirk Tangiers, for example, offers day heli trips which, shared between 10 (the capacity of its choppers), can average out at the same cost as a day’s lift pass.
While the facilities in resort leave something to be desired, you’ll be happy not to have too much choice after a long day on these massive hills. If cabin fever does kick in, the railway town of Revelstoke BC is just a 6km bus ride away, with plenty of shops, restaurants and bars and a homely Canadian frontier vibe.
In constant development, the master plan for RMR has yet to be fully realised – with a new run, lift or shop opening more seasons than not and plans for the construction of a huge hotel and shopping complex any day now.
