The Stubai Valley - or Stubaital – is a 40km valley in the Tyrolean alps, home to Austria’s biggest glacier ski area.

There are a couple of lodgings near the foot of the glacier, where you’ll find a sizeable car park, ski shops and two main ski lifts. But most people opt to stay in one of the nearby villages along the Stubaital Straße road that leads up to the glacier.

Neustift is the closest, a 20-minute drive from the glacier base station. There’s also Fulpmes (a 30-minute drive) and Mieders, Telfes and Schonberg (each about a 35-minutes away). None of the bases are known for their lively atmosphere, but you’ll find the main hub of bars and restaurants in Neustift.

This relaxed environment makes the area terrific for families, helped by the fact that Innsbruck airport’s only 20-50 minutes away by car (depending on where you’re staying). Last time we checked, the Winterbus Stubaital linked Innsbruck town, the villages and the ski areas – making getting around easy.

There are four different ski areas shared between the villages in this neck of the woods (Stubai Glacier, Schlick 2000, Elfer and Serles) – all covered by the Stubai Super Skipass which usually includes access to local indoor swimming pools and the ski bus.

One of our favourite things about the Stubai Valley for families is that under 10’s can usually ski free with a full paying adult. The ticket office often also sell a youth pass for 15-18 year olds, making the week away much more affordable. Another thing we love is the glacier’s family ski area by the Gamsgarten cable car, complete with a gentle boardercross and fun slope.

The surrounding villages are traditional and quiet – perfect for relaxing evenings and quality time together. Don’t miss the toboggan runs in the Elfer area, which are some of Austria’s finest and funnest.

With the Stubai Super Skipass in hand, your group can explore the surrounding ski areas to their heart’s content. And last time we checked, you could benefit from offers like a free ski pass for every 10 people. Austria’s biggest glacier caters for all ski and snowboard levels, with oodles of groomed and powder runs and a socking great snowpark.

Winter walkers have miles of prepared trails to get stuck into, and activities like sledding make for a cracking group activity. Make Schirmbar your meeting point for the week and enjoy snacks and drinks together, then head back to your base for a quiet evening. Eat, sleep, repeat!
